It is way cut down and the wheels are really deep. Offset to the inside of the wheel.

Hello Bonehead, hey is ur rear axle cut down "shortened" if not are ur wheels offset to the out side of the wheel....

Howdy Bonehead,
Forgive me for not asking permission first but I am writing to you because you know welding and I have a safety issue I need a straight answer on.
The steering radius on my car is too wide and I have been told by shortening the steering arms I can tighten up the radius.
My question is this: how do I know if my steering arms are forged steel or cast steel and can they be cut and rewelded without causing a danger to me and others on the road. I need to shorten them about an 1 inch from what I have been told. I am thinking of a half lap joint, bevel the edges and mig welding them back together.
The straight axle/front supension is from a 50 model chevy truck.
