I’ve had a soft spot for the y’s ever since my 54 f-100 that the ex wife got in the divorce. Had a 256 in it that would amazingly enough roast the tires. In fact when I got it running again after it had sat for a few years and needed new tires, the first thing I did was light em up until there was no tread left. Personally I think the y is one of the most underrated small displacement engines from the 50s. Probably why anytime I find a y for cheap I snatch it up. Anyhow, I didn’t get much accomplished this morning after running errands and swapping my argon tank for a new one. I was able to reinforce the top of the body in preparation for building the roof and I got all the inner skin off the 76 hood. By the time all that was done it was too hot to continue on so tomorrow I hope to get the hood cut to size and start welding it together. I think it’s going to be a little too short to just use the one hood so I will have to source another to graft onto it to finish it off.

If everyone worked at their projects like you do there would be no 10 year builds.[cl

There are a few reasons I am trying to get this one finished as soon as possible. One being because the girlfriend has been giving me crap about not having her own car since I built Coppertone and Sadie. Another because I have entered the RSC 4K buildoff and I don’t want to start on that until I have this one finished. And thirdly because I am going back to school in the spring so my time then will be very limited between work, school, and building the RSC car.

Tried my hand at turning the f-150 hood into a roof yesterday and it’s not going as smoothly as I expected, surprise, surprise. So seeing as today will be spent mostly on the road, I will try at it some more tomorrow. Also, the hood is almost a foot too short so I will have to graft in some more metal to fill in the gap. I’ll get some pictures up once I am happy with how it looks.

Got back from picking up the engine way late last night so not going to accomplish much today. Too hot for this kid. On my way there and back I had plenty of time to think about my roof issues and how I can solve them. So now instead of having a full roof, I will make the outer edges by creating hoops to go from one side of the roof to the other and then line the center with 1” square tubing. Once I have the tubing in place I will cut the straps out of the center. This will open up the entire center section of the roof and I will eventually make a roll back sunroof for it. I’m still figuring out the engineering of it in my head but it should work out well.

Got the engine unloaded after everything cooled down a little. Upon further inspection, it is a 1957 Mercury 312 so super score. It’ll need all new gaskets, seals, and a flexplate. Plan is to pull the factory intake off and install my 3 deuce Offy and some new carbs. Not going to even try to clean up the original Ford carbs. There’s clean oil in it but there’s no way in hell I’m not going to change the oil before starting it up.

I’ll get pics up of the 312 soon enough. Just busy trying to get the body worked out. Started some real work on the roof this morning. Got the framework for the roof finished up and was able to get the passengers rear corner worked to where it looks correct.

Drivers corner is formed to go with the rest of the roof. And the passengers side roof panel is fitted. I’ll get it all tacked in tomorrow then move onto the drivers side.
