Havent been on lately as I’ve been working mad hours at work leaving me with only a small amount of home time and not much time in the garage. Got my new wire feed ordered today and next is to work towards a tig rig. Maybe once weather actually gets better and stays better I’ll be able to spend less time at work and more time in the garage. It’s been one helluva winter up here and it’s probably been just as bad for you guys north of the border.

So there’s really nothing new to post up about other than my new welder(lincoln power mig 256) should be here any day now and I just made a deal on a Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 51 that I found on craigslist. It’s not very often you see a newer machine for sale up here and when you do it’s typically broken and needing more to repair then what it’s worth. Still waiting on all te snow and ice to melt so I can get the truck hone and yank the engine. I really wish that it would just warm up and stay warm already.

I bet the car will look really good with the front end moved back 8" like you did. I'm excited to see the new side profile, as I'm sure you are!

It's been a fairly mild winter up here on the other side of the border. Other than a couple cold snaps and some snow in the last few weeks, we didn't get much of a winter.

Well, it finally showed up today. Just need to load up some wire and get to layin beads. Will need to swap out my outlets(really should have waited but live and learn I suppose.)

So, as you all know I made a deal on a 68 f250 back in february when we had 4’ of snow on the ground and -30 degree days. Well, I finally brought it home on friday. Got to really look it over and decided that it’s way too nice to cannibalize. So instead I’m gonna be going with the 200 buck rebuilt 360 from a friend’s dad and keep the truck as is. Aside from floor pans and the passenger’s side upper cab corner it’s in great shape. Factory 390, power steering, disc brakes, and dealer optioned A/C. Pop open the camper special compartment and there is not even a scratch in the factory primer. So the plan is to get it running with the help of my friend’s 14 y/o daughter and that’ll be her first car(as long as she stays with it and keeps her grades up.) You see, she really wants to learn to work on cars but her “father” won’t take the time to show her and this is the perfect platform. She’ll learn welding, wiring, and some basic mechanics. I’ll have to post a few pictures and make a thread when the time comes.

Good to have you back.
have fun with the truck. It sounds like a great father/daughter (even though the girl is not your daughter) project.
When my girls wanted to learn something or help out I always figured out a way to let them. Life lessons.
Start a build thread. [P [P [P

Good for you on taking the teen in to help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm with smallfoot, no pics it didn't happen [ddd [P[P[P

are those cup holders on the welder? [cl

glad to hear about the teen, dont get discouraged if she seems to be losing interest once or twice, they throw a lot of spaghetti at that age to see what sticks

Yes, my welder has cup holders lol. And underneath is where I keep consumables and the extra rollers.

I can remember when I was her age and wanted to learn but no one would teach me anything and my school dropped their auto and welding programs.

Here’s some pictures of the truck.

It’s been a while and as usual for me, life has been getting in the way. I found another truck with a 390 for the 33 recently, brought it home, and started ripping her apart. Looks to be low miles but I’m still going to rering the engine. Got everything ordered aside from the clutch and balancer today. Should be in next week and I can get it back together.

Started cleaning pistons today. Carbon buildup is so bad I’m having to soak them in carb cleaner for about 12hrs and then use a wire brush for the tops and a gun cleaning brush for the wrist pin bosses and the ring grooves. The oil control ring was collapsed and now I know why. There is a coating of oil that almost looks like molases but it’s all coming off. Would love to find a blower manifold and blower to take advantage of the low compression and deep dished pistons but for now the factory 4 barrel manifold will do just fine.

The pistons are taking a long time to get the carbon loosened up but I’ve got all but one that needs to be sprayed down with clean cleaner and one that needs cleaned. Next will be to remove the lifters one at a time, disassemble them, and clean them good. There was a lot of sludge in the lifter valley and the only thing I can assume is that it was from the engine sitting for so long. Heres a before and after of a piston.

Looking good! Lots of work but worthwhile to save it. The sludge is more likely the result of not changing the oil regularly plus the oil back then was not of the quality it is now. Once the oil rings fail, the oil gets contaminated with fuel and carbon deposits speeding up the sludge buildup. The light grey goo you sometimes find is ash from low quality oil - remember service stations used to have a rack by the pumps with open quarts of bulk oil - glass bottles with the spouts on them?
