I've searched the threads and couldn't find any ideas on running another rad in the rear of the rod. I'm installing a mild sbc in my rod and with it being chopped and channelled, to get the grill shell height in proportion with the cowl, I'm afraid it dosen't leave much of a rad. The custom three core, large tube, is about 15x17 inches. I was thinking of squeezing another rad in the rear, maybe hanging from the frame over one of the axle tubes/four bars with a fan. What I need is an idea of how to "tee" it to the normal cooling system. I was thinking of running a hose/tubing/hose from the heater lines and plumb it through back to the heater core and then back to the engine. Does this sound do-able?

Output from motor to input on primary
Output from primary to input on secondary (in the rear)
Output from secondary to input on motor.

Best I could come up with.

I think running a heater core in the back with a small elec fan on it is a good idea. If you've ever cranked the heater to cool an overheated engine...works pretty good.

Could prob scrounge a heater core & fan assembly from a junkyard car.

I'm considering doing exactly that on my 27 I'm redoing. It was always on the edge cooling wise and now that I've bumped up the HP a lot I'm worried that it might be tougher to keep cool. The radiator is a custom one from the Brassworks, but it's chopped 8.5 inches over stock, so it is marginal.

I am adding a short Ford Racing water pump setup that gives me an inch and a half more room in front of the engine, so I can now run a huge electric fan motor whereas I was limited before because of hardly any room. If that doesn't do it alone I'm going to add the heater hose type radiator in the back with an electric fan on it.

Being that yours is a Chevy you might be ok. For some reason they simply run cooler than Fords. The 350 in my other T never gets over 150-160 even on the hottest days, so you might not have to add anything else.

Mr. Gusset did that on his '29-used a school bus aux. heater & fan combo (remember-mounted under a seat @ the back of the bus?). Fixed his overheating problems.

The synthetic oil people claim their slicker oil reduces friction--and the heat caused by it .. Also 20% of the heat in a motor is carried in the oil. I have had good results using synthetics with an add on engine oil cooler on hot natured motors..--You might consider those changes to help marginial cooling system.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm gonna try the syn. oil ( being the easiest solution) first, and if that's not enough, I know where I can get a school bus type heater core. It will be a little tricky plumbing it, but then again, isn't that why we do this in the first place? The challenge of doing/building something different, and seeing it work? Thanks again guys, and I'll let you know how it works out.

Glenfoxman,
Not trying to sound rude but what are you in reference to ?

ninop69,

Whereabouts in Ontario are you located?

Here's a linkie for the place where my employer buys buses and parts:

www.leedstransit.com

No parts listing on the site, but there are parts contact links there which would enable you to talk to somebody about an "underseat heater."

Unfortunately, we've not ripped any out of the old buses we've scrapped over the past few months...but I could check around and see if we have one hiding in a corner...;)

Regards,
Shea:)

Take a look at a '65ish MUSTANG V8 Radiator...Think they measure around 19" tall and 18" wide at the mounting flanges (they can be trimmed down as well for even more clearance.) They run around $130 at Autozone.

They are 3 core rads but the upper inlet is on the oposite side of a Chevy....no big deal..just get a swiveling thermo housing and you'll be good to go!!!

Fits great on the front of my fordor in a heavly chopped grill shell.

cooling system

Go with an aluminum rad. a stock size alum. rad will out cool a heavy duty copper rad. any day. you can get an alum. rad for the 65 mustang for @ $185

Fox thats what I've got on mine runs any temp I want, but I'm also running a 4.3 vortec 4bbl. heads intake mild (marine) cam. So it's not apt to run hot anyway.
