I just got this engine. The casting Number is 3970010.I looked it up at mortec. This is what I found.

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4

How will I be able to identify which engine it really is?This is the first time that I have had a casting number with this many CID's. I would really like know.I am sure that you guys can help me on this.

Thanks in advance.

I think they are all 2 or 4 bolt main, 4" bore blocks. I don't know how to tell them apart. I have had many of the 350 4 bolts with that casting number.

Chevy used three crankshafts 3.00 3.250 and 3.480. The 302 uses the 3.00. stroke The 307 and 327 use the 3.250 stroke and the 305 and 350 use the 3,480 stroke. All these cranks are interchangable in that block. Give me a casting number on the crank and I can probably tell you what the stroke is:cool: Dan

302 engines were small journal and 327 engines were small journals up to 1968.How do you see a small journal crank being interchangable with a large journal engine ?

I know its not a 302.So its either a 327 or a 350.I was wondering if the bearings and the rings are the same. From what I have been told that they all are a 4" bore.So that leads me to beleive that the rings would be the same.I am just wondering if the bearings are the same.As long as everything is still in standard size.

I am sure that there is someone that can help me.

One way to tell what engine you have is to pull a head off and turn the engine so the piston is all the way at the bottom of the cylinder. Then measure from the top of the piston to the top of the deck.A 350 will measure 3 1/2" and a 327 will measure 3 1/4". Both engines will have a 4'' bore.Hope this helps
