i have a 1994 explorer rear end .it is a 8.8 the bottom line is 3L73 8 8 4H11
does the L between the 3 and 7 mean that it is a locker?

Yes.

3L73 = 3.73 ratio, L= locker, or LSD, Limited Slip Diff.

8 8 = Ring gear size.

4H11 = year, month, and day produced. 1994, Aug 11th.

3L73 does compute per ford 8.8 id's to a

limited slip 373 diff....the rest of the numbers are probably build dates, plant and such....not big on ford parts but have a friend who is....he says the 3L73 is correct for the L/slip 373 hope that helps...
