Tranny ID & rear end help?

we have an older "green tag" auto trans out of an early cougar / mustang 302ci. in a 48 ford pu, we just purchased. When in low ( 1 ) gear, its like a tractor in first. and moter wound up pretty tight at 60 mph. We have not figured out gear ratio as yet but, 411s come to mind. what would be a better gear ratio for the rear 373s or 308s or some thing in between? Need more top end, don't need to pack a lunch to go 50 miles. Don't need low gear to high either. Got any suggestions for this old 3 spd auto?? Also what is a "green tag" trans, and how can I find out exactly what this tranny came out of? thanx

If you are running the stock rear the gear are low not sure if they are 4:11.

You may want to look at getting a 9 inch rear from a 1959-72 ford pickup. That rear is almost a bolt in. The spring perches match up to your springs. You may need to shim it to get the pinion angle. that way you can run any gears you want and still have the 5 1/2 bolt pattern for your wheels.

If you use a 73 and newer rear it is 3 inches wider and may push your wheels out to far.

I used both 3:70 and 3:50 for those trucks.
