During the off season I want to put together a new motor for my SDRA dragster that has a little Chevy Gen 3 194" motor currently.

I am looking at a Chevy 250 block pour filled to within 1" of the deck, Bored .125 to 4.00 for 327 forged FT pistons, O deck the block, CR about 11.50-11.75, Clay Smith cam about .550/.550, Small chamber 62cc head with sbc 1.87/1.60 valves, After market 4bl intake with a 600 cfm carb. Will run water in 1" of the block and all of the head. This setup will make 266" and I hope 270-280 HP.

Just a note that we can not run slicks in the SDRA dragsters, only 6" DOT street tires so it helps to keep the bottom end power under control and make lots of top end. Dragster runs a PG with 8.8 Mustang traction lock and 3.77 gears.

What say out there, comments and any past experience with this type motor build? This is a home build motor with cost to be reasonable.

I'm assuming the block fill is necessary after the large overbore....
What about going to a 292, with a 'safe' overbore of .060 you'd be over 300", no block fill needed. 283 pistons may work since their bore was 3.875, same as the 250 and 292 six.
Or is the increase in torque with the long stroke 292 more of a problem given the tire limitations?

zzrodder -- This motor will be a high rev 7300-7500 RPM and 292 don't like RPM much over 5000 with there long stroke without sending the bank for Hi Perf rods. The 283 pistons only fit a 230" motor with a 3.25 stroke. 307 fit a 250 motor with a 3.530 stroke.

Ya, the pour block is because of the .125 bore and the 327 standard pistons can be had in forged aluminum. The extra torque of the 292 is not what I need with my 6" street tires.

Don't get me wrong, the 292 can be built to be an RPM motor & take 7500 rpm but is going to cost some big dollors (rods, pistons & valve train).

Thanks for the interest.:D
