3 or 4 speeds chevys????

can any one tell me about the imput shaft rings on a 3or4 speed chevy trany?
I have a bunch of 3and 4 speed saganow's and i want to sort them out
I would like to know how to tell what gear ratios each has and whitch is best for a 411 or a 340 rear gear on the street.
Also i want to know which color plastic tailshaft gear to use with a 411 or a 340 in order to get the speedo to read right ?

And please look over my speeling i know it sucks my wife tells me all the time?

Pull the side covers off ( watch the shift forks they will fall out ), and count the gear teeth like a ring and pinion. The ones i have messed with are usually 1.72-1 or a variable of that. The typical 3 speed has a good ratio for use with those diff gears. While you have the covers off take a look at the syncro dogs as this is a pretty good indication of trans condition ( or poor clutch use ) and overall health.
