A Question of Noise

The majority of Rat Rods have open or what looks like open exhaust headers.
How do ya'll get by the noise laws?


I ran my '65 F100 with open long tubes for about a week till I got the exhaust ran. Man did it sound good.

where im at the cops dont care unless ur a tuner car for loud exhaust, all the muscle cars an hot rods run open headers, as well as some trucks

You won't get away with it Virginia for very long. We have annual safety inspection and mufflers are required. Even antique cars and that includes hot rods are required to have muffers if they were on the car from the factory as original equipment.

We've been pretty lucky so far. Mine is semi loud through baffled megaphones, but my Son Dons is outrageous through open headers, and his Brothers car threatens to be just as loud, if not worse. Florida is a pretty forgiving State on this stuff, and the cops generally leave you alone because they realize you are not racing around causing trouble, but just enjoying your car. Now, if you act like an idiot, that is a different story.

I don't know, maybe our cars aren't too loud after all, what do you think?

I have open short pipes on my coupe and it's pretty darn loud. I plan on running full exhaust but I haven't yet. If I don't, it'll be just a matter of time before I get snagged.

I have baffles that I put in... rarely. Just born to raise he11 I guess.

When I am around cop cars I am at idle an low RPMs as I can.

I think several guys in the Mid-East just got very big smiles when you kicked those 4 carbs in Bill...........something about them now being able to afford a new Rolls Royce or something.

I forgot how good your Hemi sounds.......don't put exhaust on it.

My has 6 straight pipes with VW exhaust tips it really not as loud as it looks like it would be. I was at acar show and 2 State Police Officers were looking at it and loved it. They never even mentioned anything about the exhaust.

Same here but really... my car's no louder that nearly every Harley on the road!

Around here they don't seem to say much, we have thousands of Harleys with drag pipes in town every summer.
I like a healthy sounding V8. I live just outside the city limits and there is a straight stretch past my place that everyone likes to go wfo. Mostly I just smile and think OK but those straight pipe diesels just pi$$ me off. They are the worst sounding engines ever, only thing more annoying was living on a river where those airboats ran.
I guess the point is, keep considerate of your neighbors. (PS, I am building zoomies for mine, probably have baffles tho)

Yours has that "Don't F**** With Me!" sound. I love it.

I had a '93 T-Bird street rod with 2.5in dual chambered Flowmasters on it and it would set off car alarms in parking lots. That was always fun.

No problems out here in Nevada. Hard not to draw attention to yourself in some of these cars. Sure is fun.
