Man, I wonder if that's one of the war time originals. Something to do with the ration stamps for fuel I believe. If you had a vehicle that hauled things you were rationed more gas. I believe there were companies that sold kits to convert.

Yep that is an aftermarket slide in pickup bed which allowed the vehicle to qualify for an increased gas ration. A conversation starter in this taildragger wherever it goes for sure. So pickup trucks got their name because Ford originally sold cab and chassis trucks. The buyers provided their own beds in whatever configuration they needed. If a "pickup" bed was wanted it could be ordered then delivered by train. Then it was picked up at the depot.
