what kind of dash could I swap into a 47 mercury coupe. something simple without all of the extra trim. just speedo and glove box door.

Agree with both these statements. I personally love the dash board on those Mercs but if you want something simpler then either take off all the chrome on yours and start filling holes or look to a truck dash. I believe that your dash is still a bolt in style where as many of the truck dash's that would come close to fitting your car were already being welded in or stamped as a part of the interior bracing.

......this is a 41 ford dash that was cut up for trans am gauges in the early stages

The dash has a lot of rust holes and no trim to fit around all of the holes. I would have a lot of money tied up in trim to get it to look good. I could use that money to get it on the road.
