First things first:

Better exhaust, headers with a good 2 1/2" exhaust through good flowing mufflers like flowmasters.

Next, manifold and carburator. Edelbrock Performer with a 600 cfm carb, either Edelbrock or Holley. Don't forget a good air cleaner.

Cam. Comp Cams high energy 252H

More performance? Port the heads and install bigger valves.

If more? Go with a bigger cam.....

These things can be done one at a time when budget allows.
 
Along with the above-

Mill the heads to bump up compression ratio.

MSD Ignition System- 6A- or 6T box, coil wires
 
Is it a poly318 or regular, because it effects parts availibility.

I can get stroker kits, manifolds, ignition systems, headers, cams ect for the poly 318- I just picked up an origonal Chrysler dual quad factory manifold for my 64 Poly powered Fury:D
 
im just sayin the a-block is like a chyrsler sbc. ;) there's alot more stuff for it compared with the poly, for the average person. unless you go to PAW

;):D I'm not even referring to P.A.W. If you wanted a 500+ hp Poly 318 the parts are out there- just gotta know where to look:)
