chevy 250 L6 (.080 or .125 overbore)

I would like to see if someone can clear up this overbore situation.

I just picked up a 250 L6 out of a 66 Nova and a 292 short block for future build. I know that I can overbore this motor and install a set of .080 over pistons from Summit that have a smaller .085 dish. This setup would make about 9.8:1 CR with a -0- deck.

I am thinking of trying a .125 overbore and running a set of 327 sbc FT pitons as more of a hot rod motor that is going to make 1/4 mile passes only.

Problem is I can not figure how this combination works in a 250 block with out changing cranks to use a 194/230 (3.250 Stroke Crank) and even at that the C. H. is not right on the 327 piston.

Maybe I am just losing it!!!!!! What ever "it" is. :(

Here's a dyno run of a mild 250. 277HP @5,900. Nice flat torque curve.
The compression height difference is 0.035". But the stock 250 piston is a ways down in the bore. That's why the 307/327 pistons will work. Stock 250 crank and stock length 5.7" 250 rods. Google Autowerks chevy 6 to see $500 Ross forged racing pistons. That's where I found this dyno test too. This is getting me excited about the 292's I have in the corner.

bob w -- Thanks for the information, I am going to pull the head of the 250 tomorrow and maybe after I measure how deep the stock piston sets it will be a little more clear.

Also this will give me an idea on how much it will take to -0- deck the block.

I am going to put this 250 +.125 together for next season, run it a year, pull the good stuff and build the 292. I think this 250 will make a good 225-240 HP and live. Should be real competitive out this way.

Don't do the 292:mad: I would love to see you do a Ford 300 with a PG or C4, with your building talent it would be a ride and you can knock it out in 2-3 months max.[cl

Pulled the head on the 1966 Chevy Nova 250 motor I picked up. Found two broken intake springs on #1 & #2 cylinder. This may have been the reason it was replaced. Motor has been rebuilt before as it has +.o40 pistons with .085 D-shape dish. I measured the deck clearance and it was .033-.035" so it has not been decked I would say.

I measured a set of 327" 4.000" Std Bore pistons I had and they had a 1.671 C.H.

When I put the numbers together it looks like I would have a setup that would be .031" taller than the 250 setup I have now. A new set of 4.000" 327 pistons have a C.H. of 1.640 and leave me about .010" to cut the deck to -0- deck it.

I will have the cylinder tested for wall thickness and make sure it will take 0.125 bore. If it looks to thin I will use a set of 0.080" over .085 dish pistons and -0- deck the block for them. May pour fill bottom half of the block and run water in the rest for short 1/4 mile passes.

CR with stock 75cc 250 heads & -0- deck would be about 9.37 CR and about about 10.27 with 327 4" FT Pistons & -0- deck.

Lots more to be gained with 194 head, valves, shave the heads.

Chevy 250 1966 Nova engine color

Well guys I'm back with another question on engine paint color.

The L6 250 motor I am going to build is from a 1966 Chevy Nova. It is a dark red color, not a bright red or Chevy orange. I would like to paint it the same as original. I went on line and found two colors, one is Spectra Red that is listed for a 1966 Nova and Orange Red that is listed for a 1965 Nova.

Tried to get on Steve's Nova website after registering and can't get on, Not a very friendly site, "Not RRR".:D

Does anyone know the correct color for this motor?[S

Why is it when someone whats to build a I-6 the first response is get a V8.....
Sounds like you are on the right track....run the carbs with straight linkage and you will be amazed at the response. 94's are around 165 cfm x 3 = 495cfm WOT..... Check with Sissell for cam specs

Chevy Inline 292 motor

Ricks Garage -- Thanks for the encouragement on building an inline.
Have talked to Mike Kirby at Sissell about the cam, springs and valves.
this motor is going into a Vintage Dragster with a PG. I hope to get a true 275-295 HP out of the build, If I do I will be a happy camper.[dr

There are 100's of SBC at the races any given weekend, but only a few straight 6 motors out there. We need to keep them alive. :DTom

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQKvdHkfTms&feature=player_detailpage This is my .030 over 292, Self lump port head, JE pistons, Engle .231 duration, .565 lift cam, Harland Sharp 1.75 rockers, Bill Smith pushrods, balanced by Self machine, ATI Super Dampner with #88 Durometer rubber, Hamberger oil pan, Frank Pattern Manufacturing two piece timing cover. It's going in a 47' Diamond T pu , with alum flywheel and a Richmond 5-speed.

Chevy Inline 292 motor

zulu -- That is one fine running motor, looked at the YouTube and it sounds real sweet. Where did you get the valve cover and the spacer so you could run the early model style with more rocker room. Thanks for the spec's and the information. What HP is it making at what RPM? Are those JE pistons FT? Tom

292 motor

zulu --Is the self head a one off alum head or a modified Chevy 230/250/292 head?

Are the JE pistons FT or Dome and are they custom for your motor only?

Is it possible to get a spec sheet for the pistons?

What is the top RPM the way you have motor setup?

I am still working on a motor build for next season.

Thanks, Tom

292 L6 motor

Rev -- Is this a Stock rebuild or a mild built motor? I am looking to build a 1/4 mile race motor for a Vintage Drag race Class and the motor needs to put out around 350 HP @ 6200 RPM. Would like to run around 10.50-10.75 CR.

Any and all comments are welcome, ideas! :D

well in truth i dont know,, the guy told me it had a cam,, thats all i know,,i didnt build this,,, and i have never reved it pass 3500rpm, if it is stock, its prettystout!, with 27 inch slicks with the posi 3.08, it will do pretty impressive burn outs, i need new rear springs , cause i wharped the left side,, they are stock springs, i am not drag racer but i wouldnt be afraid to jump on a stock v8! i guess what i am saying is , i was never a l6 guy before, but i found someone who restores 67 72 chevy trucks who pulls the l6 and 3speeds out to be replaced with v8 autos,, iam goin to try to buy everything he pulls out,,, i got inline 6 fever![dr

After Market Pistons & Rods For 292 L6

Rev -- Sounds like you got hold of a real nice motor, easy to fall in love with these inline 6's.;)

Does anyone out there know of some after market suppliers for pistons and rods for a 292 race motor? Pistons can be Flat Top (no dish) and rods Alum or steel.[S

Chevy 292 with Chevy 366 FT pistons

Has anyone out there tried putting Chevy 366 truck flat top pistons in a Chevy 292 L6 motor?

A standard size 366 piston is 3.937 bore and a 292 + .060 bore is 3.935. You only need to hone an additional .001-.002 out to fit the bore. You have to take .008-.010 off the piston top so it -0- decks, not a problem as they have a thick top. The small end of the rod must be opened up from .928 to .989 for the 366 piston pins.

This looks like it will work for a mid dollar drag race motor. Pistons are about 280-310 for a set of 8 as apposed to after market custom ones at 500-600.
Motor would be 301" with about 11.25 CR.

With 72cc heads with sbc 1.94/1.60 valves, 500-600 lift cam, Offy intake with Holly 750 or Home built intake with five Holly 94's I would think that 325-HP would not be out of the question.

I guess I'd be curious as to how much more they

Weigh over the standard pistons? if they were about the same or less....certainly might be stronger and with the increased pin size would take a pounding......interesting idea....

Chevy 292 / BBC 366 Piston Swap

sgtpontiac -- The 366 pistons are a little lighter than stock 292 pistons. The pins are really not a factor as the 292 .928 pins would work fine.
The 366 piston use .989 pins so I have to do a little small end rod work.

The main reason for trying this setup is to get the compression ratio up to the 11.0-11.25 range without having to buy custom pistons at $600 a set.

Looking For 194/230/250/292 exhaust headers

Looking for a used set of exhaust headers that are for the Chevy 194/230/250 6 cylinder motor. Need not be nice as I am going to cut them up to fit my SDRA dragster I am building. Cheap is good, what's out there?

The ones I am looking for are a pair (3 tubes to 1 collector).

Please PM me with price & shipping to 93312.
