Well I have a 292 L6 4.8 Chevy motor that the bottom is done 0.040 LP gas pistons for more compression. The head has been decked 0.020 BBC valves .550 lift springs and lump ports installed. I will be ordering ARP head studs and then the assembly begins. What I have not been able to do is find some of the parts to finish the motor. Timing gear cover, dip stick tube/dipstick, alternator brackets. THE question does anybody know of a source for these parts? The local junk/scrap yards don't keep anything. I have gone through Summet,Jegs,Speedway. I started this with a bare block and crank.

i think several places offer the timing gear cover like stovebolt engin co and i thought clifford used to. as far as dip stick tube sometimes thats a lot of work to find one since a lot of time they dont release w/out bending. have you tried lmc? the alt brackets are different depending on year, i think they are same as 250. i have i'm sure i have at least on of the older 60's 2 piece sets somewhere. you think that would be on ebay. the a/c brackets for 292 only fit 292's and used to be rare as hens teeth.

The toughest seems to be the dipstick tube. Cliffords does not list a timing cover. I have been on EBAY and never see alt brackets and where I live there is no need for AC.

You would be surprised, I posted some wanted ads on a truck site, and although it took a while, eventually someone who had a 2 year only heavy GMC grille shell got back to me and I bought it.

I'd start posting on sites where that motor was used, I'm fairly certain someone will contact you that has a parts motor and can sell you the pieces you need.

Does anybody know the diameter of a SBC dipstick tube? There is always a possibility of interchange. I am going to measure the hole in the block later today . As far as brackets it can't be that hard. Thanks and I will start posting on the truck sites for the timing cover. Just so some will know this is for a 26 T coupe Rat that I am just starting. If I could post pictures I would.

Well I measured the block and the opening for the tube is 0.350" so if anyone can measure there block tubes it may narrow it down.
Thanks for any help.

Well I tried all the web sites as suggested to no avail. I did find a dipstick and tube for $25 plus shipping so it wasn't a waste of an afternoon. I will post on the want ads here maybe I will get lucky! The classic truck and brothers only have parts for V-8 and the rest have internal parts only.
Thanks for the reply's

If this gasket set fits these engines, logic should dictate that the covers are the same also.

Timing Cover Gasket Set GMC Chevy Jeep AMC 151 2.5 194 230 250 292 for Sale

This was on a site called drag times and these are also on ebay. So I would look for a timing cover for any of these engines.

Well, all the 292 specialists should help you out. Sometimes though, you gotta step up to the plate to bat.
You can get the bolt on or the weld on adaptor for the dipstick tubes thru Goodson Engine supplies. You'll have to lay it out and do the work yourself, isn't a biggie.
I usually just weld it to the block after test fit to make sure the crank won't eat the dipstick....

just what alot of people like to do, weld steel to cast iron.[cl[cl[cl

I found a dipstick and tube from autoworks and it is on it's way and Tom Langdon is helping for a timing cover. Also Classic Trucks has contacted me with one of there used parts suppliers. They are both going through there stuff to see what they can find for the water pump pullies and it does appear all the 194 through 292 are the same timing cover which will make it a hell of a lot easier! At this point it is in limbo until something happens. The moter ended up at the buy off the shelf BBC so I wasn't going to quit too easy. Thanks for all the help!

The only other thing was the lower end is already assembled so it would be too late to start welding on the block. At one shop I worked at 35 years ago I did the cast repair and we always put the parts in an over to preheat. I don't think I would want to disassamble the motor at this point it has taken 3 years so far.

I have a Mitchell Interchange Manual from 1976. It list the 4 cyl 153, then the 6 cyl 194, 230, and the 250. These will interchange, BUT the timing tabs are different. Now it does not list the timing cover for a 292 truck engine, at all. Like it never existed. So we can't be 100% positive that they will interchange.

I don't know if that helped you any at all. :(

i have ran into 3 styles of timing covers- the main style close to top, one with a timing marks more to drives side, then have heard of the step van style with it on bottom. i am sure they interchange with 250/230. it's very easy to use brake line to make a new dip stick tube and cut off to aprop lenth after you get it in. i trimmed off a little on the end i drove in with the lathe. i also slide in a rod while i was driving it in so it didn't kink. you can use any lenth of stick then just cut off till it's right lenth. then use brake line bending plyers and bend a little out from engine.

Well the dipstick came in and I am still working on the other ( water pump pulley) but this has been a learning experence. As I said before I just wanted something different and it added a lot more to the build as far as cost. I hope the wow factor comes through. All the suggestions have helped. The timing cover through the factory is the same but there are multiple timing markers. Also there are 4 different water pump pullies and I am just passing this on so nobody else does this the hard way!
Thanks again for the leads
