I take the retaining clips off and pull the line(s) away from the frame. I've also fashioned a shield from some scrap sheet, sometimes I do both, every situation is different...

Old license plate works good for a shield just bend around what you want protected.

Any and all of the above. I also sometimes wrap the lines in a wet rag if I can keep it of the weld. If I can't the lines are too close to where I need to weld.
