1935 wire wheels

Can anyone tell me the back spacing on the 1935 wire rims, and why don't we have a wheel section here ???? I know i'm not the only one that has wheel questions or am I ????

I think all wire wheels are centred,so whatever your width,half of that would be your backspacing.Dont know what make your asking about, I have chevy ones from that period,they are 4 inches wide,ford are probably similar.

35 Ford rims are 16 X 4 and centered.

And you need special spacers/locators to use them properly with later Ford hydraulic brakes. Speedway and others sell them cheap.

The wire wheels need support behind the center hole. You can buy the spacers, or just weld 1/4" pieces of pipe to the wheels, the diameter of the center hole. Oh, and the wires won't work on the drums that fit outside of the hubs, you need the ones that go behind the hubs.

The wheels I am looking at are the 1935 ford 16" x 4" wheels, a guy close to me has 4 he said are in good to nice shape, he siad 3 look great but 1 has minor pitting, he said you cant see the pitting from 10' away but it looks like orange peel in the paint when your up close, i spoke to him in depth about the hubs and spokes, he said they have no broken or missing spokes, and no cracks in the hubs in the spoke area, I did know enough to ask about those problems, from what I have read up on these wheels, they were the hot ticket back in the day, and I know I will need spacers, but I will need adapters / spacers so they will mount to my newer stuff, has anyboy used these adapters here and have you had any problems ??? the ones at the bottom of the page.

Are they the bent spoke Kelsey Hayes wheels or the regular straight spoke? If they are the KH wheels grab em fast.

Just the straight spokes, I dont have the cash for the KH wheels, I refuse to spend more on wheels than I did on the entire engine and trans rebuild.

Those adapters from RallyAmerica should be fine. They actually make some good products, but from time to time they slip up on telling you the truth about your stuff being shipped. Gary, the Dad seems ok, but his Son seems to tell you what he thinks you want to hear, rather than the truth. We had a problem with them a few years ago, (it is going out this week ) and recently there was a thread on another forum where people were bitching because they were not getting call backs or emails for money sent.

Just make sure you pay with a credit card so you can enter a complaint, and make sure you ask them if the parts are really in stock and will ship that day. Then call the next day to get tracking info.

It's a shame, they really make nice stuff, but they tarnish it with stuff like that.[S

Thanks for the heads up on that company don. I will need to buy the adapters, I may just have to wait on them to show up, my rear end is 5x5 and my front rotors are 5x4-3/4 that way one wheel will fit all around, I am thinking of 600-16 front and 700-16 rear but I dont know how the 700's will look on the 4" rim, I would love to run taller on the rear even if I could go up to 800 but I don't think the rims will take that much tire.
Is anybody here running the big tires on the lillte rims and what do they look like, I don't want them to look poofy

I didn't mean to paint them as Satan or anything, but just wanted to give you a little heads up so you can get their assurances you won't be waiting 6 months for your parts. The Son (Jimmy) kept telling us our stuff would go out "next week for sure", that went on for 3 months. Finally, I took off the gloves and laid into him, and he shifted the blame to his Dad, saying "Gary always makes promises he can't keep." Yet, it was Jimmy I had been dealing with all the while. He didn't apologize or try to salvage the sale, so we went elsewhere.

But on the flip side, lots of people on another forum think they walk on water and posted great experiences with them. So maybe it is hit or miss.

You can run a 7.50-16 on '35 wires with no problems. I would recommend a smaller frontrunner though. The 6.00's tend to be a bit bulky on the front. 5.00's are good, 4.50/4.75's are better. [ddev

Yes, those two different sizes give a good rubber rake and look proportional. My Son Dan is running 7:50 x 16's on the back and 4:50 x 16's on the front. His are on narrow 4 inch wide 40 Ford wheels front and 4.5 40 Ford wheels rear, but essentially the same as your 35 wires would be.

You also need to check for cracks around the lug holes...if they were ever mounted up and run on drums without the spacers, they tend to form cracks in those areas...

Hey Don I didn't want to sound like I was afraid to buy from them, just more like I need to order now so if it takes a while it will be ok, I love your sons truck, the 2 of you build some very nice cars to be hanging around with a bunch of RATS I need to keep my front tires around 26" so the 500/525 will work great but I want the rear tires as tall as I can get them, I never even thought of all black tires, always looked at www, but dans truck looks great all blacked out, hmmmmm maybe going in a new direction now, thanks for the great info and the pictures of all the bad a** cars you build, keep up the VERY nice work, and thanks for all the help over the last few years you and all the others here have given.
Randy long time no talk, we got the 50 here safe and sound, and I found a doner car to cut pieces of the roof out of to fix the chop, I want to slant the post, and they had cut them too short anyway on the doors, so it all worked out, I hope you are doing well, I hope to finish the 30? chevy soon so I can get the 50 underway.

I love hanging out here,the rat rodders on RRR are my kind of people, and some of the best grass roots rodders there are.

I'm kind of a wide whitewall guy too, but on his car the blacks just seem to fit the look a little better. He has me thinking I may want to go blackwalls on my rpu build too.

As for Rally America, I think you will be fine ordering from them.

Don is correct about rallyamerica. However, I have ordered twice from them and recieved the goods in a week. I think it depends on if they have the parts (centers, outers, etc.) in stock. If they do, delivery is fine. If they have to wait for parts, and they probably wait 'til they can order a quantity, then you wait. Sometimes they are at the mercy of their powder coater and chrome shop.

There's similar and worse stories regarding some of the other wheel companies. I'm guessing they all buy their parts from the same few metal stamping houses.

I enthusiastically agree with Don. This is one of the very few places where a discussion like this can happen in a fair and objective manner without drama and vulgarity.
