Try Flood Penetrol. I use it to preserve the patina, works good. I brush on a new coat every year. Easy to use, just brush it on, no need to tape off anything. Doesn't leave any brush marks either. Get it at Lowe's.

Depends on what you are welding. Finish work always requires grinding when comes to aesthetics and or safety. The best welders that I've worked with over the years always had a flap wheel in the wait. Penetration is what really matters.
