I have used the top design with no problems. It is easier to form and less welding. FWIW , I made mine out of 7/8 solid. It was cheaper and sure stronger. Very little extra weight. I had the holes drilled and the tap started on a lathe.

I am sorry for your trouble. I would not trust the machinest to put new linings in the drums. They were cast in place and I think there are ridges that lock them from turning. The aluminum will get hot and try to expand away from the liner thus loosening it. The liners were iron and I don't know...

Check the boundary between the liner and the aluminum on the drums. They can corrode real bad and warp so that they can not be turned. When machining, do not cut any of the lining. Only the aluminum that interfers with the backing plates.If the lining is cut,the shoes will overhang the drum...
