Yesterday I came across a mercury flathead v8 out of a 51 Lincoln. The guy says it's all there but needs rebuilt. He is asking $2500 for it. I personally think that is outrageous. I have no need of it, but have several ford friends. I don't want to send them to a guy that is just nuts on his pricing. Is that what they are going for?

Is he sure it's a Mercury? Lincoln had their own version of the flathead that looks like the Ford/mercury version, but is larger.
$2500 is way too much IMHO. $100 for a core that might not even be any good would be my top dollar, but I'm cheap....

You can buy runners all day long for less then a grand. And rebuilders for $200 and up. I would of asked the guy where he got his price at.

I bought 3 and they were too cracked up to fix. Henry Ford had the v8 built from his will, not from good sense of design.

Price is way out of line. And it doesn't look like a Lincoln Flathead to me. The big Lincoln Flatheads had the distributor at the back of the block. They were 337 Ci's and are really considered boat anchors. They were also used in some of the Ford big trucks. The Mercury flathead was more like the Ford. The Lincoln was different.
There is one for sale near me and the guy wants a grand for it and it is seized up. Claims that it came from a fire truck with only 6000 miles on it.
The price of running flatheads seems to be becoming more reasonable as of late but there is always going to be someone that thinks theirs is worth a fortune.
Here is the link to the one near me.

I agree with you Willys ... A running flatty , I mean one you can hear RUN is well worth top price of a grand .... I have a bone yard of "" it turns over " and ""ran when parked "" motors out back ....

I got my running flat head for 800. I payed what I thought it was worth but I got to hear it run see the oil pressure and see temp was all good no way in my right mind I would pay 2500 unless it was a running super charged flat head.

I've gone through 2 motors until I found a good one on the third try. 2500 is actually not to far off for a running merc. But that motor doesn't look like its ran in years and has been stored wrong, unless it's been in a heated shop all its life. Ask him if he would be willing to take the heads off for inspection and the oil pan. If not its only worth $100 bucks. Anyone can slap merc heads on a 8ba. It's the crank that's important a good merc crank go from 500-800 bucks.

Mercury flathead

Here is one I picked up.motor tranny(automatic) radiator all in running condition..I paid 1300 might be a little pricey but I had the cash and wanted one... installed it in a dragster chassis
