well I wanted to have another truck done by now, and its close, but life is full of surprises.

first, we bought that new property and my wife who said were werent going to do any remodeling whatsoever took her jekyll/hyde potion and immediately bought f o u r t e e n h u n d r e d s q f t of flooring because "we" could lay it ourselves (got a $4100 labor quote). "we" turned out to be me and my daughters cat, it took about a week and only cost 250 for a table saw. I was a never-done-it to expert in about 55 hours, no transition strips.

attachment.php

then it took forever (about a month and a half) to find a nice enough s10 donor, lots of 2.2 trucks out there but notta lotta 4.3. I ended up buying a reasonably priced 97 4.3 shortbed. it needed a water pump and the front suspension was shot but it ran really great (for short runs).

attachment.php

the tranny had a... hummmmm. I looked at the fluid and it looked bad and smelled worse. I did a fluid replacement using the cooling lines in about an hour, bought a five gallon drum of new fluid and just pumped it out 3 qts at a time into a bucket with qt marks, turned the engine off and poured 3 qts in the dipstick tube, until the fluid was nice and red. took about 18 qts.

streeeped.

with the help of forky. i saw an ad for a forklift, looked like a nice small rough terrain forklift but the ad was doom and gloom, barely moves, barely lifts. I waited till the price halved then halved again before I called, maybe I could fix it. got there, does it run? oh sure, extra tank too!. you said it doesnt move? well it moves fine until you press the "left" brake (inching brake, disengages the clutch). ah. you said it doesnt lift? oh sure, its just slow (proceeds to lift at idle). huh, ya dont say?

$900 later I had forky. my friend with a big trailer picked up, it was about an hour away.

attachment.php

I greased the mast and bled the inching brake and ordered a master cylinder for the real brakes besides. he seems to like the attention, a couple whacks on the thermostat housing and the temp gauge settled at 225 degrees (previously 250+). climbs my back yard slope like a billy goat.

attachment.php

my friend gave up on his 98 2dr blazer convertible project, gave me the 4.3 and the brand new trans! but that meant my motor cart was full. picked up another at the yard store!

attachment.php

I had a nice (relatively speaking) 5w cab but this one popped up on marketplace the day of a snowstorm, I wasted no time driving an hour like an idiot in the ice and snow. when I got there he said man a lot of people have been calling but your here so lets do this.

attachment.php

he was selling because he didnt want to fix the rust. the only rust was over the windshield, my 5w looked like 60% rust compared to this.

attachment.php

a fiddly repair to be sure, but hey lets get after it.

while i was at the yard for the cart I got some rectangle tube for the stretch. needs about 8 inches.

attachment.php

attachment.php

i jigged the whole thing to the floor to keep it all level and square. worked great! you can see the tube goes inside on the outside and overlaps the inside for strength.

got a disc rear from my buddy's scrapped blazer so oh well what the hell lets put that in too.

attachment.php

redesigned my universal trans mount

attachment.php

moved the motor and trans back 8 inches

attachment.php

attachment.php

cut a set of cab mounts and popped the cab on for a looksee.

attachment.php

well how about that.

needed some seats, I was cruising looking for another chevy bench to recover when I spotted these beauties on marketplace.

attachment.php

the asking price was $$$$ but i was looking for more of a $$ to $$$. i recognized the color as the same one I used a couple years ago on the red gmc I did, the name looked familiar. i realized it was the guy i used for upholstery! his daughter was listing it. I knew if I called I wouldnt get a penny off, so I had my friend call and haggle, ended up saving a lot over what the last seat cost and boy they look great. ramcharger seats, if you are wondering.

I still have trucks all over I havent picked up yet, went to viola and picked up the (mostly) blue front clip and doors to match my (mostly) blue cab.

here is the name, BOB PETERS CONSTRUCTION. dont worry about that green coming through, I will take care of it.

attachment.php

attachment.php

they are 52+ doors but I know the trick to get them on a 47-51 cab.

front clip mocked. looks like my 3" springs are 2" too much though. got some 1" to fix that.

attachment.php

my new core mount setup. almost ready for prime time. works grrrrrrrreat.

attachment.php

no serp belt (cant put it on with ac compressor off) means a complicated system to hold the water pump still to get the fan off.

attachment.php

worked!

attachment.php

laid in fuel system and wiring

attachment.php

attachment.php

time to tackle the windshield rust. this is a indiana cab, not a lot of rust problems except mice nests that hold humidity. the guy i got the cab from gave me a patch with it so I cut out what I needed.

attachment.php

and cut out the bad.

the patch he gave me had enough to replace the inner rustout on the header AND this important doubler. the old one on top was almost gone, replaced with the one on the bottom.

attachment.php

install reverse of removal. pass side only needed the small outer section.

attachment.php

attachment.php

a little high build and sanding and almost ready for some spritz of color.

attachment.php

big order from LMC including glass, better go in person. save 10% off the order and 100% off shipping, worth the trip to see the perfect showroom stuff too.

attachment.php

only need the smallest trans bump.

attachment.php

5 degree booster plate! so the reservoir works correctly.

picked up the blue bed and one blue fender I had at storage.

I think WOW is an understatement! You make my head spin with all your activity AND progress. I'm glad you're back as well.

Well.......that didn't take long
Looking good Joe, I think you got this AD thing down pat. [cl[cl
Like the wheel choice too. By the way, nice job on the flooring,
not bad for an expert ;) Oh, nice score on the seats, should
look really good. Thanks for catching us up on your projects.

Wow! is an understatement! You've been a busy boy. Is there anything left in Kansas? Better get my brother in Eudora to start harvesting some vintage tin.

Dude... looks like you got caught up in a whirl wind! Congrats! I want a $900 forky too!!! [dr

BoB

thanks guys, you are only really caught up to dec 5th or so, I just havent uploaded any pictures to my laptop in a bit.

I glossed over the front suspension rebuild, and the chasing of parts like the guy who said "$100 for drop spindles and coils and leafs and blocks and shocks but YOU GOTTA PULL THEM" like that would stop me. I showed up and he said "I AINT LOANING YOU ANY TOOLS". I popped my loaded caddy trunk and it took about 45 minutes, he liked my efficiency and even set me up with the driveshaft and fuel tank and loads of other stuff.

i am working in CAD today, I will download some pictures later!

Nothing to it when you say it real fast and post lots of pics and don't breath much and don't run out of welding wire and cut off wheels and don't sleep or eat and don't mash your da_n finger and don't catch your pant leg on fire and don't run the fork lift out of gas and and and IT"S LOOKING GOOD BROTHER!!
:eek::eek::cool::cool:[cl[cl[P[P:cool::cool::eek::eek:

PS: TAKE YOUR MEDS!!![ddd[ddd

currently on a round of antibiotics for a sinus infection, when I first started i was all sorts of wobbly, sinus infections affect the balance and vision and clarity of the mind too. I bought some parts from a friend he said 120 for this and 150 for that, i did my mental math and somehow handed him 320. when i realized I said oops I gave you an extra 50 he said "yes you did, thanks!". [S:rolleyes:

last truck the oil pressure sender install was a real crud show. mostly because I waited till it was a running assembled truck and THEN said hmm maybe gauges. this time I was S-M-R-T and decided to wire before fire. on the 4.3 the sender is beside the distributor, which when a 4.3 is in a 48 3100 its straight down at the middle of the firewall. having all that extra time from being so smart I looked around an hour or so for the roll of teflon tape i used on the last one, finally finding it.

attachment.php

attachment.php

flared up the brake lines for the front brakes while I had everything apart for the sender install, having removed the booster for access. I would still like a more reliable "on-vehicle" form of flaring tool, this is a fiddly chore.

attachment.php

got the rad mount isolators installed. extra points if you know what they are.

fan has about 1/4" clearance, perfect!

my V6.2 column/pedal mount is now 6.4 as I refine pedal height and upper column position. there will be a 6.5, not ready to mass produce.

steering shaft in and done, worked perfect!

laying in harnesses, everything (barely) fits.

attachment.php

had to rewind a bit, was almost ready to fire the truck up. when I pressure washed the motor there was a LOT of crud on the trans, the valve cover gaskets were more sieve than seal, so i figured it was oil. but when I was underneath my hand brushed the boot on the shifter cable and came back bright red.

shoot.

that means that the TRANS PAN GASKET was leaking. and since it was leaking out, there was a 100% chance my vigorous spray job let water leak IN. a look showed a cork gasket and a few loose pan bolts, i seriously considered tightening the bolts and moving on with life but THATS not fair to the eventual owner of this truck. water will shell a clutch pack in about 1000 miles. it took two tries at the parts store for the gasket (guy gave me a TH350 gasket for a 1997 s10?)

i used a siphon pump to pump out the excess fluid from the pan. on s10s with the rad mounted trans cooler, there is a lot of runback into the pan when the engine is off, which is why you check the level with the engine hot and idling. when off and cold the fluid level is way up the stick. I kept track of about 7 qts that ran out either siphon or dripping (had to go get the right gasket after all)

this is what greeted me in the pan.

all the dark color is water under the trans fluid (oil floats on water). good thing I took myself seriously and changed the gasket before starting and pulling all that water through the trans. needed 7 more qts of new fluid though. [cl[cl[cl HUBRIS!

it was getting close to christmas and I didnt have a truck for the yard, so I went to storage and tow barred the 56 home for the job.
