I'd sure be interested in knowing what caused the run away engine. That kind of thing is always in the back of our mind. The broken weld on the Speedway 9 inch is very concerning - that has never crossed my mind. I always thought 9 inches were generic and bulletproof.

Thanks . Yes. The dark is banding strap and the light is mild steel; etched in ferric chloride. The knob was the same material, turned in a lathe.

Damascus Shifter Here's the shifter I made. The color washes out - I cleared it with a little of the body color, so it is not gray but almost a wood tone.

Yes. The tuners say they can improve mine, but I don't know by how much. The engine has lots of torque where I want it, runs great, doesn't stall. There's always a chance the tuner can screw it up. HP Tuning software gives tuners the ability to lock the tune so no one else can tune it. Lots of...

Thanks. What I want is a good street tune. Don't really care what happens with the engine above 4000 rpm. The only thing I don't really like is that it doesn't snap back to idle when you rev it (not a drive-ability thing). I think I would be better off having it tuned on a dyno, but i'm not...

I talked to Jess' guy. He has a third party who tunes part time come in and do the LS motors. I just didn't like that idea. I think I have found a place, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Got the alignment done yesterday. The car drives better and makes a lot fewer noises. I think the...

Thanks for all the comments. Good to know you guys are still interested. In reality I do enjoy the shiny paint and all the compliments I get and being able to say I painted it myself. I have talked to a couple tuners. The one I liked had a dyno that bolts to the axle. Which means removing the...

update It's been a while so as a refresher: 5.3 LS type truck motor, T5, 9" Ford with coilovers and 4 link. Mustang II front. The pics are of the engine cover. The first one is the best "before pic I had". The Ford has a giant opening in the grille to duct cold air into the interior. With...

Great job. I'd be happy to put those on my '53 3100 - just saying, in case you change your mind.

    Narrowing control arms

John, Thanks for the info. I read that article and what I paid most attention to is torque gain or loss at 2500 rpm. Every cam listed showed a loss of torque when compared to the stock LM7 cam. This truck has a 5 speed - 1800 rpm at 65 mph. I'd like to be able to pull the overpasses without...

    Narrowing control arms

3100 gets an LS Thought I'd post the next update of the '53 Chevy 3100. Found a LM7 ( iron block 5.3 Chevy gen III other wise thought of as an LS) long block. The only info I got was that it came from a '99 Yukon. Paid $225. Felt like a bandit all the way home. Around here a take out...

My 350 is an '80's vintage smog motor. Advertised 8 to 1 compression that usually checks to something like 7.8 to 1. I also recently heard that the HEI that I have contributes to its lack of grunt. It seems to run out of go at about 3500 rpm. I have been tinkering with it and found out that it...

I use this material because it's free. Not the best stuff for knives, but it makes a nice wood grain effect. The knob was turned on the lathe, don't have a pic now, but I'll post one when I get it.

Thanks for all the compliments. I'm happy you enjoyed the build - it did get pretty tedious along the way. A couple other things I was going to add: The car runs at 180 F. One day when the outside temp was 115, driving in traffic with the AC on it got almost to 190. Every other time I have...

Thanks Earthman, sometime you need to see it in person. And yup an LS derivative for the 3100, I think.

Damascus shifter The Damascus is 3/4" wide banding strap and mild steel sheet (1018) cut the same dimension as the strap. The paint is removed from the strap and everything is cleaned with acetone. I alternate materials until I have about 1" thickness- 20 -30 layers. There are lots of methods...
