There is some new legislation about to take place in Cal. dealing with cars that are 15 yrs. and older that would require them under go a annual smog check. Check it out on the Hemmings news letter or at the goodguys site for info.

How intensive of a smog check? The same as newer models?
I used to do smog testing in Anchorage and their program was patterned after the Cali. one. My Stock 72 F250 with only a TAC and PVC could pass the tailpipe test for a new car.

Always gets scary when those guys in suits start trying to pass laws that are aimed at getting "smelly, unsafe, loud, or otherwise unacceptable" cars like ours off the roads. Sooner or later they might just succeed. 
If you think laws like this can't happen, when I first moved to Cape Coral Florida they had a ban on parking trucks outside in the city. Not just BIG trucks, but everyday pickup trucks and vans. Cops would come around at night and ticket you if you left it outside. One guy came home for lunch and the cops gave him a ticket. They finally overturned that goofy law, but it just goes to show how this can happen.

They used to smog all cars in CA up until about 2000 or so then it went so many years old and no smog required. Won't suprise me if they change it back. CARB could say they need to, to meet air quaility standards and no one not even SEMA could stop them.
That is exactly why they are trying to pass it - meet the air quality - you also have to think about the fines they could get for failure to have it checked - REMEMBER - Cal. is BROKE !!! - so any $$$ they could get would help. This kind of legislation could be popping up in every state.

you have to have politicing everywhere because it sticks it nose in everywhere.
