Preliminary fittment pics of the NOTORIOUS "Home built c-notch kit"
Tell me what you think.......

looks great so far...but depending on how much room you have from the top of the frame rail to the bed....id bolt on another piece of angle iron to the top of the frame rail using the top 4 bolts that you installed....like this "L"

I was planning on putting a piece under the top, not so much worried about the sides unless you think it really needs it....

I'm still taking all feedback on this.
All comments still welcome.

First off I think your brackets are great. I like the thought and effort that went into them. But Flat, I call em like I see em. And I only bring up these points to try to help you out. 1st thing, Cut out as little frame as you can get by with, inside the bracket. You need that vertical web we talked about earlier. 2nd, for future reference, the lines where the cutoff wheel continue on to the bracket are kind of bad thing. I always think of those things like a "score" like when you are cutting glass. It is just a place for cracks to start. In your case it may be okay since the base metal is so thick. I think the connection to the frame of your bracketry is plenty stout, I guess those are grade 8 bolts. I love to see the progress. keep it up.

looks good flat, i think after you get it notched, if there is any room between the axle after it's flipped and the top of the notch, you should have some side strips welded in there to add some side re-inforcement. if that dosn't make sense i can always do a bad drawing in paint to show u what i mean.

on the plus side, i saw a bolt in c-notch kit in classic truck, didn't look nearly as beefy as yours nor did it use as many bolts. so u must be on the right track.

Bonehead,
Thanks for your feedback. You just don't realize how much everybody's feedback has effect on the final product here. I understand what you are saying about the "scoring" effect. I still have a whole other piece of material that I can cut to make sure it gets done right.

Joe,
I have seen those other bolt in kits and know what you are talking about. They just look too "Scrawny", that is why it appears that I'm just too laid back about the situation.

Thanks guys.

OK guys,
I have been asking questions on the chevy truck forum and decided to make this bolt in notch kit even more stout. I have taken in to consideration everything that was offered up from here and there and re-enforced what I already had. I now have the top frame rail sandwiched between 2 pieces of stock, (the thinking was to have it laminate for added strength). Like a laminate wrench.

Here are some more pics, tell me what you think. If I'm just being too "Bull headed" about it, let me know that too.

Bonehead,
You asked in a previous post, those are 1/2in grade 8 nuts, bolts, and washers.

You really think that should be strong enough to hold? The main reason I'm asking is because I had to remove 4 boult on the side in order to put this support piece in place. If you think I need to redrill to compensate for the loss of clamping force please let me know.

Thanks Bone, I really value you input as well as everybody elses.

I agree with Bonehead & Gastrick. That should be planty strong enough to hold together. Now you just have to make that 1st cut,,,,,

I FINALLY got a definitave answer as to why what I currently have is NOT strong enough. I got a response from "Rock krawlin" over there. What he explained to me (my interpretation) was that I needed to make my re-enforcement on the side of the frame instead of the top. The way he explained it just made sence. You guys take a look...

Click on home, scroll down to the suspension section, it is titled "Is this strong enough".

You know what this means, No more pics till later today,Maybe then I will have the frame cut.

Flat, that's what me and Bonehead were trying to tell you. That the notch was so deep that there was no side support for the frame rails. That photoshop pic on the Chevy truck forum illustrates exactly what we were talking about.

The reinforcement piece that you made will combat that to an extent and will probably be enough, but if you lessen the depth of the notch, that would be even better.

Hey Gastrick,
I don't know why it didn't sink in till that post. I'm just hard headed I guess.

The notch is not going to be that deep. That is the best I could do with what I had. On the other forum someone illustrated about where I need to notch it up to. Plus I'm going back to my original idea and will post pics later.

Thanks guys.

I would say that looks good. Plus I think that you can go about as low as you want with that much notch. I bet that frame rail cut much quicker than your 1/2 inch plates did.:D

HAHAHAHAHA....
Take another look at the second pic. That is the plate that will strengthen the inside of the frame....It still isn't cut. I'm gonna go deaf with that grinder going for long lengths of time.....

I know there is a better way, I just can't get there from here...
