scrap anvil stand

So, after I purchased the big 566lbs anvil, I cleaned it up and ground & sanded the face and horn to my likings. I`ve owned a whole bunch of different anvils over the years but this one surely is up there for hardness. That took some hrs and a bunch of abresives of sorts to get it done. I did win in the end.
I wanted to build a steel stand because I`ve always used wood and I don`t even like wood. I don`t like the steel tripod stands you see on online so I figured I`d build one my style. There are 3 big washers welded to the underside to get it stable on uneven ground, but it won`t tip over. I cut up some 10x10 I used for another project and for top and bottom I used the plate my old drill press was mounted to when I got it.
That plate is 20 mm thick. I really liked putting some of that heavy material to work. I lost count on how many times I moved that stuff. Glad I saved it though.
Packed the cube with fine sand and it weighs around 500lbs. Lastly I glued the anvil to the base to get the ring out. Looks like I need to get the forge out one of these days...

That anvil is a beauty now with the work you have done to it. The base couldn't be better.

well, the whole idea is that it won`t move whatever I throw at it...
I welded 4 rings to the base so if needed I can chain it to my cherry picker and take it for a ride.

ow, I just bought another one... poor beat up thing...380lbs Not sure I need it but it crossed my path and needed saving. More on that one later.

Ha! Just needed saving! Just curious, do you have a displayed collection of your forge tools? I don't think my biggest sledge would make big bertha walk and it's a 14 pounder.

No ,I don`t. When I used to forge for a living ,I had my threadle and powerhammers , 100t press ,coal and gas forges etc. to beat heavy metal into submission... Now the focus lies on sheet and I have 1 gasforge , my anvils and the old flypress to do some hot work. I do have enough hammers.

I picked up this one today. It had been sitting under a workbench for over 50yrs and had to go because the building was sold. I forgot to take before pics, but it was nasty. I got it cleaned up a bit because I was curious what I brought home.
Turned out to be an English Attwood Stourbridge. I can`t find the birthdate but from the shape my guess is 1850-ish. Not sure if I`m going to restore it or leave it the way it is. From the side it looks good but it`s pretty beat up.

I was surprised to find out several years ago that anvils have such a following. A buddy of mine brought another fellow over to my shop to see a couple of trucks under construction, and immediately spied my old (and badly chipped) anvil. Didn't even comment on my projects!

Dollar a pound was standard around here for a long time. Can't touch that now. You have to fall into a deal!

Overhere prices for quality anvils are pretty steep too. I think forge related shows on youtube and tv may have something to do with that... Now most think they have gold with a beat up pos boat anchor.

I started looking around out of curiosity and they look to be about 10.00 per pound now days. Then I came across this. Might not be too far from Dutch's house?

yea, they are a pretty big dealer. Still 750mls from my place... That`s a distance at least in my book...
