    BMW M3 with a Chevy 350 engine

This isn't what you're expecting but it's interesting. A buddy sold a Chevy 350 engine to this guy and he showed up in a BMW M3 to pick it up. I didn't think we could get it in his car, even with the seat out, but we did. I hope he makes his 250 mile drive home OK. Andrew

    1942 Ford Truck Build

It's been a bit since I posted on RRR. Now that I have a roller it's time I posted a few pics. I just finished up the front suspension, which was the most challenging part of building the frame. I'm not sure I like the front shock angle and there's little travel room (Ya, I miss calculated). I...

Is a fuel return line needed?

I'm building a 64 Studebaker Avanti R2 clone engine and I'm switching it from mechanical to electric fuel pump (4–12psi). I will also be running a Paxton supercharger and installing a boost reference regulator. My question is, with such low psi, is a fuel return line necessary? Thanks, Sid

    DIY Suicide Door Hinges

I didn't like the style (and cost) of new door hinges so I made my own out of 1/4" steel bar. I think they turned out pretty good for my limited tools and skill. Sid

Make part of frame into air tank

I'm going to be installing an exhaust horn on my truck and it will be powered by compressed air. I was thinking that instead of installing an airtank, that I could block off one side of my frame, which is 2x4 rect tubing and use that to store the air. This would also serve as a way to route the...

What are good spark plugs for a Flathead

I need to pick up a set of spart plugs for my Flathead project. I'm running Edelbrock heads, so do I need a logger plug than stock. What plug would you recommend I run? Also, how to you determine if you need to run a hot or cold plug? Would it be that if you're running a little rich, you'd...

How to braze or solder sheet metal to brass

I’m working on a custom intake manifold for my flathead. The main body that sits on top of the carb is made out of sheet metal. To the top, I’ll be attaching 3 WWII howitzer canon shells, that I’ll setup like bug catcher intake. What is the best method for attaching dissimilar metals? MIG...

Keep your Carbide Burrs from loading up from aluminum

I'm sure I probably learned this the hard way. I've been working on an aluminum intake and heads and found that I hate it. The carbide burrs load up fast when cutting aluminum. At first to remove it I'd just cut on some steel. About the time I was finished and frustrated, I added a few drops of...

Baby got a new pair of shoes

Finding tires for my truck build has been a challenge. I was going to go for the Firestone cheater slicks for the rear but couldn’t really find anything to go well with them on the front. I ran across Hurst Racing Tires site in the past and somehow forgot about them. It’s cool that they’re local...

What was this? Ford V8 emblem on metal rod.

I picked this up at a garage sale the other day and though I could use the emblem on my trucks grill. He had another that said "Deluxe". Does anyone know what its use was originally for? Thanks, Sid

    My horn

Last night I was working on an engine stand and I dropped a bold that rolled under my father’s work bench. Digging around for the bolt I found this horn (see attached sample picture). I thought it was a train or tugboat horn, well come to find out it’s an original Aermore automobile exhaust...

    Flathead valves

In my search for valves for an 8BA Flathead I've been looking to see if there are alternatives to the expensive aftermarket "Flathead" valves. I've heard talk of some using SBC Valves but they must be cutting them because of their length. Then of course you loose that hardened end. Anyway this...

Does a timing gear need balanced

I picked up an aluminum timing gear for my flathead and IMO the quality is lacking. There is a fair bit of casting flash that I want to clean up. Since it's such a light weight component I can't imagine that cleaning some of this up will cause any balancing issues with it but I just wanted to...

    I need to bitch

I’m working on my first rat build (1942 ford truck, 1952 Flathead 8BA) and things are coming along great. Now I want to build a competitive nitromethane mixed injected Flathead for a front engine dragster. As luck would have it, I’m working with one of the most experienced engine builders who...

Dry film lubricant - thermal barrier coatings

In my boredom at work I spent too much time on the web. I ran across a site that sells turn-key flathead engines. They mention they thermal coat the intake and exhaust passages. Is this just a sales pitch or would it provide any benefit to the 8BA I’m building. Then I got onto the topic of dry...

Info needed on cam driven fuel pump

I’m hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. As I’m building up a flathead for my 42 truck, I’ve decided I need another flatty for a alcohol injected slingshot. I want to run the mechanical fuel pump off the cam and have it mounted to the front cam cover. From what I understand...

    Engine disassembly – stuck pistons

OK, I’m on my 5th flathead disassembly and I’m getting better at it. Some come apart better than others and the one I’m working on now has some seriously stuck pistons. I de-rust the block for a few days using an electrolysis process, which works great, but these pistons are in tight. The...

How low should I go - rid height

Just started building the frame (pics to come soon) and I'm trying to determine how low I want my ride to be (1942 Ford Truck). Initially I was thinking of about 4" but that seens down there a bit. I want the truck to be a daily driver, well at least during dry weather. I will have some height...

    Engine block welding/repair

I picked up a rusted out 8BA Flathead and found that there's a deep gouge across the gasket surface of the block deck from one exhaust port to another on the adjacent cylinder. Other than the gouge, and some rust pitting on the deck, I think it's a salvageable core. The gouge is about 1/16”...

Is a Panhard bar really necessary?

My rear suspension will be a parallel 4 link and coilovers. With this setup, I need to install a panhard bar to keep the axle laterally located, which occurs (correct me if I’m wrong), when cornering. Now let’s say I drive over speed bump, where both rear wheels move up at the same time. With...
