Hey guys it's been a while, almost had to sell my truck but got a decent job and can hang on to it and maybe finish it some day. I'm working on buying an old fork truck for the 3 cylinder Perkins out of it. Do you think it will be enough power with a turbo to push her down the road & get some decent fuel mileage?

How well does it push the old ford truck it is in down the road? I think I've seen a few of those in some of the old bread trucks that are now mostly lawn service truck or home maintenance. Should be o.k. for mileage and cruising. Will for sure be different.

3 cylinder diesels are currently being used to set some very high mileage numbers but most are being put in very aerodynamic car bodies with smooth undercarriages. I think the stock version has about 25hp and the turbo 10-15 higher. That ain't much HP but it mileage is what you're after, go for it.

This 100+mpg car was in the Mother Earth News recently.

I think the Gamma Goat that I drove in the Army had a 3 banger Perkins in it. It would cruise ok for as heavy as it was.

Just have to figer out what gear to run and you should be ok.

Have no idea on your question CD, but sure glad to hear from you again! You still have the same shop you had moved into? How about the cool boss? Ever sell the bus?

Hey Charlie

I know most guys on here dont follow Mother Earth News but there is a fellow who has been fiddling with a 100 MPG home built roadster...the link is below...

He knows his stuff when it comes to MPG's...his story is pretty cool too...it is a little too sporty car for me but I learned a lot from his project...would love to build a rusty one tho...I would be happy with 50 MPG's myself....

I've never seen a Perkins Diesel used on anything but a fork lift or a farm tractor. Anything is possible, I saw a VW Bug out in Denver 27 years ago that had a Thermo King diesel sticking out the back of it, hooked to the stock transaxle.
