Carpet over wood floor boards

I have a 34 chevy truck, the floors are wood, there's a big hole around the shifter in the floor, and I'm about to put astro turf in.

What I need is to know what kind of lining and or padding will work over the transmission area. The have some heat shield pading over at my local store, but they are thick. Pep boys has some thermal sheets that are thin but look a bit weak.

Any suggestions?

While I'll agree it looks fine, the wood is sealed on the floor side and painted on the bottom. I have this roll of astro turf and I want to used it. Besides I do need to cover up the hole. I have to do some more work shaping up a chunk of metal, but I think I can make a half decent cover.
