I have seen the extension for the pitman shaft made by using a tube welded to the splined part of the old pitman arm, then put the nut on inside the tube. Seems to be the simplest method but I am wondering how much you guys feel would be the maximum amount of extension you could safely do with this method?

I think you could put plenty on it, if it is done right. I grew up on a farm. Combines have shafts 10 feet long that have much more pressure than steering on them. A pillow block might be needed to carry it.

Depends on how large/thick the tube is,
the size of the stock shaft and bearings.

If the box is from a big heavy car,
you might get away with a little more.
