heat gauge

heat gauge on my 61 caddy will register for a while,then quit.grounded the wire to see if gauge spikes,but does nothing is it sender or am i testing gauge wrong.anyone know

You might know more if you pull the sender out and drop it in a pan of boiling water while still connected to the gauge. It is just a thermometer and should hold steady. If not the gauge has probably worn out.

The sender has to be grounded so just dropping off into some water wont work.
If you took the wire off and momentarily grounder it and the needle didnt move, then you either have a bad gauge or the wire going to or coming from the gauge.Check the power source wire to the gauge.
