Model A Engine Question

I have never actually been around Model A engines. I have one that would be fun for a cheep project. What is the manual adjustment under the distributor for? i know it originally hooked to the steering column for adjustment, but what for?

They don't have automatic vacuum or mechanical advance. You have to do it manually with the lever on the column. Read here...
