new rebuild 350 mild build, drove it apprx 500 miles, ran great turned corner to head home started popping back through exhaust-blowing black smoke like flooding out, reved up cleared black smoke ran fine 4 miles to home, carb was leaking a little out of metering bock gasket, took carb apart cleaned re gaskested, now sounds like its runnin on 6 cylinders, popping and leaking oil through exhaust headers runnin on ground like oil mixed with gas, checked float levels, replaced plugs looked like they were flooded:confused: still runninlike crap . what say you guys

Sounds like you may have more than one problem. The carb needs to be straightened out first. First thing I'd look at is the float level, is it set to high? Also check the float itself and see if it's taking on fuel and sinking. The needle and seat ok? Any dirt, loose teflon tape, rust etc. in there? When you were driving on the straight and narrow you mentioned everything was ok until you turned the corner and it flooded out. (Run rough, black smoke etc, and when revved up it cleared out.) If the float was borderline on the high side, or sinking, turning the corner would slosh the fuel over to one side and lower the float allowing more fuel into the bowl. Straightening out of the turn would allow the fuel to settle and combined with what was just introduced would make it to full. Now all the extra fuel gets drawn in the engine causing it to flood and go rich showing up as rough running and black smoke.
Now that you have taken the carb apart, where's the float level set this time? Also check to see if the float will do what it's supposed to do, float. If it's sunk, that would explain the extreme flooding.

You mentioned "metering block" so, I assume it's a Holley. Try replacing the power valve in the primary metering block. And they make a simple blowback preventer to keep a backfire from blowing out the diaphram next time. Sniper's comments on the floats are right on also. Could be either or both. Good luck.
