steel guage

Is there any place I can find a place on the web that converts steel guage to measurements.

Example:

If something is 16 guage is that 3/16 or 1/4? If I go to the metal supplier in town and ask for a guage they look at me funny and say do you want 1/4, 3/16 or etc.

11 gauge is 1/8 th That is about the only one that converts even close.
16 gauge is close to 1/16 of an inch. (which is the same thickness as a penny)

as I know it theirs sheet measured in gauge and that # is ruffly how many sheets to an inch
then their is plate measured in inch has worked for me

Sheet metal is refereed to by gauge. Plate steel by inch and fraction.
