5/16 is fine for a mild engine. Also, you could pull from the top of the tank and not have to worry about a shutoff. Might be easier for you...

The cool thing we were noticing about the petcock valve in the bottom is it will give me a reserve of probably 2-3 gallons... enough to get me to a gas station.
 
One more thing I'm wondering about... Can a 5/16 hose fitting work with 3/8 hose... and the same with 1/4 hose fitting? I'm finding either a 5/16 outlet or a 1/4" outlet on these petcocks. This one in particular says, "Work with 5/16" and 3/8" fuel lines".
