Would putting a stock chevy 400 cam in a 305 make a difference?

Not enough difference for the work involved.

IMHO - I'd go with a comp cams cam. If you're looking for something fairly stock, their 268h cam is great. Will make a huge difference over the stock cam and you really don't have to modify anything else.

I had one of these 268's in a 305 i put into a 3/4 ton full time 4x4.
same mileage as the 350 maybe a little bit better. power wise I never noticed the difference unless i tried to tow something or had 1,000 pounds of more in the bed

problem with the 305 verses the 400 is just that, displacement. You cant go too large on the 305 as far as cams. Now, I have used different cam manifacturers and Comp is one of the best for your buck. But, if you want a good cam and lifter set for cheap, I bought one from autozone. It was a mellings performance cam (thinking it was an MTC-1). Think I paid about $150 for both cam and lifters. It is basically the old 350 HiPo cam. Smooth idle, low end torge, and had decent fuel mileage to boot.
