There pretty heavy duty, a lot stronger thAn a couple 1/2" Hiem joints. The big end is welded to 1/2" plate bolted to the beam through the 4 5/8's grade 10 bolts. I used hI Nickle rod to make sure I got penetration with good metal composition too.

Not sure how I would gusset them[S. need to take a few beverages and a stool for some reflective thoughts on how they are really going to work and be stressed as the brakes are applied. After enough time I can always find a way to add strength to things needed or not![;)[;)[;):D

Need to work on my side drafts before I can test the brakes though, and I will need some brakes for that.

I pray your right about those pipe wrenches....but I don't think they are safe, you can check them all you want after every mile but when the casting breaks at 50 mph it could be deadly not just for you but anyone else on the road! Think about it you can come up with something creative and safe, the rest of you build looks good.

I bit my tongue before, but I can't anymore, you really have no idea the quality of that casting, not something I would bet my life on... I like the idea and I think its neat, but I think you should do something to assure your safety and others.

Perhaps make it look like you are using the wrench, when behind it is a safe DOM tube or other hair pin setup...

I second that thought DirtRat.
I've broke a few especially in frigid weather.
Your welds will be fine the casting will fail.

The build looks great so far. I would not trust those cast pipe wrenches, but they do look cool. Do you still have those fat fenders? and where are you located?

I got to give you some props on the frame too, it looks sick! But the pipe wrenchs probably arent safe. I broken those pipe wrenches and snapped the handles off more than once, plus you added more length increasing the leverage on the wrench.

I think I'll have some 1" plate lazer cut to look like the wrenches, then weld the teeth on for added flair. Can't put a standard hair pin on now, just wouldn't be happy. [dr

Very very cool

Hey Kurt your truck is looking good. I am with the guys though and I don't think the pipe wrenches are safe. I also think you have come up with a viable solution. A 1/4 plate cut to the pipe wrench shape and skip welded to the inside would be sufficient and not detract from the look.:) I have seen your Packard and I trust you will always put SAFETY first. In the old sand buggy days there was a rig called the Pinto Bean and the guys would run 4 Makuni carbs on the 2 and 2.3 liter motors. They would haul *^s. Can't wait to see your ride at DQ and Beaches next summer. Keep up the good work and thanks for starting the "build" thread so we can as watch your progress. Persist and have fun.[dr Later

Well poured 2 1/2 yards of concrete for the new kitchen floor Saturday. Wheel borrows and trowels for 12 hrs Saturday and clean up all day Sunday made for little progress on the rod.

Hit it after work Monday night though. Got the back of the floor and seat box mostly done and bent up a tunnel. A little more sheetmetal for the floors and I cab start on the right side cowel steering. [;)

Well finnaly got back to the shop with the christmas Carburators. Had the flange cut already and had been working on the header pipe, but finnaly getting all the piece's together. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the last 2 intake runners cut and tacked in place then weld it all up!

quality time with the TIG

Well the fab is done just need to spend a little quality time with the TIG welding it all up. Since I just started using one its likely to be a lot of time.[;)[;)[;)

I'm thinking of having it cermic coated, guess they have a satin black. I wonder if they could put diferent colors on the intake and exhaust sides? Steering nextand finishing the brake pedal I finish mounting today too

Thanks, been stuck on trying to come up with a clean way to make it a little less loud! Definitely form over function here though. [ddd

Been knocking out the rear suspension and started the bed sides. Waiting for a seal to finish up the right side cowl steering too. More pics soon

Baffled

Ya was thinking that. Probably going to take the top back off and put a couple angled plates on the sides and a sound tube down the middle. Problem is I will only be able to weld them on 3 sides except the last one. Then put the top back on, just need to research how to best place baffles for sound.
