Thanks for the positive comments. It helps to get some encouragement.

I have been working on my instruments some this week. My brother gave me an old Hawk tachometer. It was missing the cup but is in working condition. I adapted it to my old gauge cluster similar to what I did with the speedometer. Here are the results.

I'm satisfied with them. I need to work out my fuel, oil, and temp. gauge.

Do you like my key chain?

Wow!

Went through the entire thread.[cl The truck is great and so is the thread. Real professional build. You should be proud. The best is you used what ever worked and you had. Sure saves those hundreds you were talking about. Nice job! Can't wait to see those rollin' pictures. [PSteve

Again Thanks for the comments. I'm having more fun assembling this thing. I got really tired patching up that cab. It was way worse than I first anticipated.

Russ, it's pretty easy to adapt to your old gauges. If I could of, I would have used the old ones but they were in really poor condition.

I've been pretty busy with the wiring and brakes. I'm about 80% done with the wiring and just finished up the brakes today.

There is a lot going on in this picture. The upper right is the temp. control for the radiator. There is a thermal probe that goes up to the front in the radiator. I adapted a knob off the old radio to the control.

In the lower left is the Willwood proportioning valve. I learned something here. These are set up for 3/16" line to the rear as opposed to a 1/4" line. I had to come up with a solution as they do not make a inverted flare fitting to do this. It took 3 fittings and a short piece of line to get it done.

Here are the stainless brake lines I got from Speedway motors. They are not much more than new ones. I can't believe all the dust that shows up in this photo.

Here is the the 455 Olds I got off of Graig's list. It came with a 7 qt oil pan and Torker intake. The motor had set outside for a while and is rusted stuck. The block is cracked but it has .030 forged TRW pistons and a nodular crank. The were several other goodies too. I bought it for parts without knowing anything about it. It was only $125.00. I figure I came out ahead. I have the cylinders that are rusted soaking in a 50/50 mix of acetone and tranny fluid. I'll get it apart and save the pistons for another block that I have that is already .030 over.

I think I'll use this old S-10 tank. I'm still mulling it over on how to mount it. I'm considering adapting the bung off an old fuel cell that I have to it. I'll remove the electric pump but retain the sending unit. It'll have to set off to the right a bit to clear the rear end.

I have a butt load of things planned to do over my holiday 12 days off from work! WOO HOO! Later.

12 days off would be nice.....or 5 or any.....

Nice work man...keepin it all tidy and neat....like that...a little dust will blow or wash off first time out...no worries there...had kind of the same issue with the proportioning valve I bought also..but I found brake adapters that had me going from the 3/16 to 1/4 in a hurry....mine is a wilwood manual adjust valve...but the plumbing is about the same....anyway...nice work![cl

I made some more progress. You didn't really believe I was going to run a 2 barrel did you?

This double pumper is 600 cfm. It's the first one I have ever ran across. When I got it the base had a corner broke off and the metering plates, bowls were corroded so bad they were useless. I have a whole box full of junk Holley's so I had all the needed parts. I can't believe I had the right base. Although I had to install the shafts from the original carb. Already had all the gaskets along with new floats also.

I got the radiator hoses in and built up a HEI distributor for it from several old ones. Tomorrow I plan to start on the fuel tank. I'm getting closer.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Later.

I got the fuel tank mounted today. The whole assembly bolts in so that it can be removed in case I come up with something better. I had to make my own straps. It should work for now.

It will have to come out a bit then about 60 degrees to the right and up. I think I'll see if I can find some 2" exhaust tubing that has that bend.

Just a question....

How close does that tank sit to the ground???? Maybe the pic is deceiving...looks awfully low to me....JMHO....

To answer your question it is 11.5" from the bottom of the tank to the ground. I would bet a dollar it sets higher than it did in the S-10 it came out of. I plan on added some more pre-load to the rear shocks which should make it set a little higher also. I'm not worried about it at all.

Got it all painted and installed today. I learned something about fuel sending units. I went to test it to see if it was 0-90 ohms and could get no reading what so ever. After submerging it in water in the sink, it showed 0-90 ohm. I guess it's designed to work in liquid.

53rattake62044.jpg

By tw7256 at 2011-12-28

I painted the tank with bed liner. Also I removed the fuel pump and replaced it with a length of 3/8 fuel line.

53rattake62046.jpg

By tw7256 at 2011-12-28

Next I'll run the fuel lines. I'm going to go ahead and run a return line also.

Later.

I have been working on the fuel lines lately. I'm getting closer but have a ways to go. I ran 1-3/8" and 1-5/16" hard line. I plan to connect the ends with AN6 fittings and stainless steel braided hose. This is pretty costly so I have been bugging some friends for used stuff before I buy anything. Too bad the upcoming swap meet is still about 1 month away. I bet I could get some deals on used stuff there also.

53rattake62003.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-08

Here is the back end. I made all my own clamps to hold the lines to the frame.

53rattake62002.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-08

This is the front. I'm going to use compression fittings then adapt to AN6 on the fuel pump. Speedway motors has the 3/8" fittings to get that done.

53rattake62001.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-08

Here is the Carburetor hose, it's done except for fuel pump fitting to go from inverted flare to AN6. Speedy Bill has that also. These used fittings have a certain patina to them.

My neighbor gave me a whole box of new flexible sleeve. (I bet it has a name but I'm clueless to what it's called.) Before

After. I like this better. Later.

I put the Transmission cooler in front of the radiator and connected it with braided hose.

Since I decided to run a oil cooler for the engine I had to come up with a way to hook it up. The oil filter mount bolts to the side of the block. I came up with a 1" aluminum spacer to re-direct the oil coming out of the filter back to the engine so that it will go thru the cooler first.

53rattake62017.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-21

I band sawed a 1" piece of aluminum using the gasket as a template. Then I back drilled thru the filter mount using a drill bushing.

53rattake62009.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-21

I drilled a hole coming thru the spacer from the oil pump. I then drilled 1/2 way thru in 2 areas that shared the same port on the filter mount. One on either side. This will direct oil from the filter out the front edge, thru the cooler and back into the block.

53rattake62020.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-21

I tapped it with a 3/8 pipe tap so I could put 2 pipe thread to AN8 fittings.

53rattake62022.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-21

After de-burring and polishing it I installed the fittings.

53rattake62023.jpg

By tw7256 at 2012-01-21

Here it is test installed. All I need now in a couple feet of AN8 hose.

I made this gauge cluster but all I have for now is the water temp. gauge. It was left over from another project.

I put a CS-130 alternator on it after changing it from serpentine to V-belt.

The door need some work and I only need plugs and wires along with some oil to fire it. Swap meet in Wichita this weekend so I probably won't get much done.
Here is a shot of the fuel filler tube.

53rattake62031.jpg

If I find any good deals at the swap meet I'll share. later!

I've had a big weekend. I finally fired this thing up. This engine was a unknown, all I knew is that after some work I had 100lbs+ compression. I'm happy to report it runs great and does not seem to have any issues. The transmission seems to work good also although I have not put it on the ground yet.
I was able to get this thing ready to run after scoring several items at last weeks Swap meet. I picked up some Acell plugs, Moroso wires and looms, several braided fittings and AN8 hose to finish the oil cooler. Additionally I got a new carburetor line with pressure gauge, air cleaner and a Hurst Indy automatic shifter. All this for about 75.00. I love the swap meet!
I need to get some exhaust parts from Speedway and power steering hoses. With doors and a windsheild installed I'm set for a test drive.

The other shifter I had would not work because I could not get the cable to make such a tight bend. I think this one fits my cheesy 1970 theme I got going on here anyhow.

Another cool feature of this inlet line was it has a filter incorporated into it. It came with 2 extra new filters. Thanks for the sweet deal TJ.

I'll try to get a video soon. Later!
