no trains around where im from, to many mountains, so i never ever seen anything like that. does that happen very often or is that a freak thing?

Seen that up close before. One of my buddies works as a foreman on a rail maintenance crew. He saw that before, they obviously had to replace that section of rail. He cut a piece of it out and kept it. The piece he has is no where near that deep, but still pretty neat. Something you don't see every day but I guess it isn't too uncommon for him.....
