I know its cool to have an old american classic car or truck, but for a first car for a new and young driver its not very safe in my opinion. No safety equipment or engineering in them. The most important thing to me is my daughters safety and I am happy with the car she choose. Not american but pretty damn cool for a twenty year olds car and its as safe as any car out there.

rusty, I see your point. But, I my daughter is a little different, just like me. She doesn't want a Toyota or Nissan, or any other foriegn car. Not that I have to explain, but just for info purposes she will be driving this car to school which is all 45 mph limits. She knows that anytime she goes into town or on a trip she will be driving my truck. Don't want to get off topic, but does your Rat Rod have air bags? My daughter grew up without a Dad in her life until I married her Mother 5 years ago. This is one of those things we will always have together, and she is very excited about having an older car. It is 110 hp automatic, compared to a 300 hp , manual 6 speed sports car. I'll stick to the Corvair thanks.

Thats why the Corvair was made for soo many years, what like two, because it was such a great car. The Datsun/ Nissan line of 240 to 370 Z cars were only made for what , 40 + years and still going strong. Any car that performs well is always a safer car.How much horsepower or airbags are not the only important things. Handling and brakes are far more important in avoiding accidents in the first place.Any professional driver will tell you that.A new driver has enough to deal with already,no matter where they go or what the speed limit, thats all I am getting at. And just for the record,a 350Z is not just another import piece of junk, nothing build in North america other then maybe a new Vette will touch that car. My daughter bought it because she wanted something not everyone drives. She also needed something reliable, because she is several thousand miles from home in the Navy and I am not there to help her fix an old car all the time. She does like the old Camaros and Mustangs, but they are not really practical for her.

Nice! I guess you told me. You are right in every way, and I apoligize for ever thinking that an clunker like a Corvair, would ever appeal to anyone. Especially since you have a Nissan 370ZXTRI 350 HP 6 SPEED. Lets end this thread, geesh! And, by the way,FYI, the Corvairs production lasted longer than the 240z Nissan. And, I believe that Chevy has been in business a little longer than Nissan. Enjoy your nice handling, and she will enjoy her little piece of crap Corvair.Have a nice day.

The Conrvair really was an under rated car at the time. Ol Nader had a lot to do with the cease in production of these cool cars.

Nader is a politician not a mechanic, definitely not an automotive engineer. His parents were socialist activists. I think he just found an ordinary weakness all new technology ends up vetting and he and others jumping on the bandwagon exploited the hell out of it.
It's best when they write things nobody normal reads

The only invention Nadar proof is the osha cowboy

Sorry I even replied to this post, again one of them negative canadians. I thought this was a car forum where one can discuss car related issues, but apparently we are not allowed to make some valid points and have an opinion.
My daughters car was just an example, since this was a daughter thread.I dont really care if its a foreign or american car,all I was trying to say was that a lot of the old cars are a handfull, specially for a new girl driver. I had a
65 chevy truck and it was OK going straight, but anything other then that and it was pretty scary, not something I would want my kids to drive.
Anyways, I didnt think I was wound up or there was anything offensive in my post, but whatever, you can all drive anything you like and thats OK with me.

Don't be sorry, and forget the Canadian nonsense...

As a wise man once said "I don’t know what the key to success is, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone". :)

my daughter will be 11 this year and the only thing I hope for for her first car is that she NOT steal the keys to my BB chevelle! But she has always been a hot rodder with a heavy foot (thumb on the 4 wheeler) who loves going fast. Now I know why my Dad was so nervous as I closed in on 16!![ddd

My daughters first car was a Ford Taurus her mom bought her new for graduation, her second & 3rd car was Lexus & she bought those.

There's a couple Corvairs in my area, a red one on a car lot and one somebody started customizing a long time ago and quit.

Lots of good discussion on this topic. It can be hard to keep emotions out of discussions sometimes. I 'spose that is especially true when one's children are integral to the topic.

Late model cars are filled with safety gear. That's good. They are so smooth and quiet it is possible to drive way too fast for conditionswithout realizing it. Brakes are soo good too that it feels ok to tailgate. So, in a way, inattentive, un responsible driving habits can be created. If there is a crash the protection is much, much better.

Older vehicles require more attention. You don't dare tailgate, drive fast on slippery roads, etc. The driver gets a lot more feedback from the car. A crash could be far more serious as far as personal injuries. Getting hit by another car would be more serious too.

As I see it, there's pros and cons to either approach. If there is good wisdom and maturity in the driver an older car shouldn't be too terrible a risk.

I commend you both for wanting to keep another peice of american history on the road.[cl Hope you both find something you want.

Been there, done that....

Two sons and a daughter.... both sons made it ok with driving... little baby sister not so much.... bought her a 97 GMC Jimmy 4x4..... beautiful car..for about 1 month:eek:.... while talking on the cell phone (also supplied by dear old dad)...she hit the backend of a truck with a utility trailer behind it...totaled the jimmy but she was unhurt....Car gone, cell gone, drivers license confiscated and had to go back to driving with Mom and Dad until we thought she was ready...again.... not problems since and she is now grown and on her own..... This one may very well be in my garage on Sunday. We are driving down with a trailer to look at it.
