I was just informed by the radiator shop today that since I do not know how to weld that there is no way I can build a hot rod and that until I learn to weld I should not even try.

And that is what this site for, to learn and help out. No shame in not knowing something, just have a freind that does. I weld stuff up for other guys all the time. Keep the dream alive [;)

No harm in trying to learn to weld, as long as you're not jumping right into it and trying to weld a frame or crucial parts!

I'm not going to try and do anything I don't think I can I just can't believe someone would be that outright rude, especially when I was there for business.

So I just smiled at him told him that is why the make nuts and bolts, picked my radiator up and took it somewhere else.

I've got friends that pull that "I don't know how to (insert whatever here)" and it drives me crazy..I tell them I wasn't born with that knowledge either but I figured it out.. and I'm sure you will too..

Welding is 10% knowledge and 90% practice

done

since you are done....l will be there this weekend to pick up all the stuff you can't use[ddd

right,, how rude, since retired on a medical l can't weld anymore, that's what friends are for.[;)

l've built two rods since l quit welding. what a dork.

Later

I'm sure the radiator shop knows alot about building radiators but what do they know about building a hot rod?!? You can always get someone to do welding for you!!! They need to get back to doin' what they do best... radiators!!!

Well that was easy
I suppose you're gonna listen to that crap huh [S
Either build it or don't
If I didn't do or even try to do what others say can't be done, I'd still be lookin for someone else to do my stuff :(
Get over it and man up Brother [P

Just what exactly do you mean by "build"? No you can't build a frame and fabricate a lot of parts or chop a top without knowing how to weld. But you certainly can build a hot rod by buying bolt on parts and doing modifications that way. Just depends on what level you want to take it to.

Best way to learn is to get an old car and just keeping it running and on the road. You learn about all the systems that makes a car, stop ans whatever.

If you really want to learn to weld then go to a community college or vacational school that offer night or weekend classes.

So what was their reaction when you picked up the radiator and walked out?[ddd

Learn to weld. Once you get the hang of it, try filling a gap. :D

After chopping my top, I became a specialist at filling burn through holes in thin rusted 60 yr old sheetmetal!!!

I have no idea he just left it vague

I have never owned a new car :D. Also. Went to school for diesel and auto mechanics, worked in dealerships and body shops as a parts manager up until the economy went down the tubes. (now I'm a janitor) lol

I can do about anything I want to try and do and I normally spot weld and have a friend finish weld for me I have been looking at the community college classes up here they seem to be pretty good.

Old: I am not giving up on my build this was more of a sarcastic thread because I can't believe someone who is into cars can be that narrow minded.

Ron: he just looked at me in complete confusion.

Dr: Awesome idea!!!

Trip: I understand that. The best is practicing a spot in a recessed dimple and welding the scrap piece to the table. Lol

Good answer. Walking out I mean. No need for that kind of disrespect.

Never did any welding myself until about the time I got on RRR. First try - F100 floor pans. Second go - F100 bed. Third go - 48 Olds - floors, chop, non-critical stuff, everything except the frame - hired a guy to finish weld that. It's all pretty much documented here in my build threads.

(NOTE: Years back I did some farmer arc welding with my Dad a few times, but that doesn't really count!)

That is kind of how my car was built. Was told that I couldnt do it and it would never make it over 100 miles. 6 years and over 23000 miles and proved them wrong. I wouldnt do any business with a shop that was that arrogant and they probably arent as good as they think they are.

Couldn't have said any better myself-i use to have those kind of friends-then I stopped doing everything for them-funny they quit coming around. You can learn to weld we'll help anyway we can.

He may know how to repair radiators, Bue he does NOT know how to talk to customers! Mention his shop by name so all us locals can spread the word and boycott his services.

He just disrespected the guy a little, he didn't rip em off. I wouldn't boycott them, but I'd certainly be a lot less tolerant as soon as walked in the door.
