well, in a slightly different direction, i love working on aircooled vw's. everything is easy to get to if you've learned the little tricks to it. you don't have to bend over the hood to get to the engine, you just pull up a (short) chair and sit down to work. the bad side of it: vw electrical. i think they call it the spaghetti system. there is like ten miles of wire in there and it's a lot like christmas lights, one goes out, it all goes out. the insulation on the wires is also apparently made from a soy based material (aka mouse food).
 
Ive had some rather nasty 2100 cc and a couple of 2800cc Vdubs and a couple were fitted into a early BMW motorcycle frames.

I have built some mean air-cooled VWs as well. My reference was about their simplicity.

I think it's amazing how much power you can get out of those little things.
