Bought my first cab today!

Bought a 38 ford cab off a junkyard earlier today thing is completely solid, even still has the floor structure in it, hardly any rust and what rust there is is on some stuff on the firewall so its nothing major, going to be a great starting point! I'll the couple pics I have of it up in a minute!

I haven't decided an overall length and am also undecided on whether or not to run a big single or dually rear, I'd like to run a stock non-dropped I beam axle about 7-10" in front of the grill, and run a split wishbone setup with the Cen-Pen tradition air up front, and a 4 link rear with bags, whatever motor I can dig up for cheap with whatever 5 or 6 speed I can dig up cheap. Not sure if I wanna chop it, its got great proportions as it is, and since I wanna drive it a good bit I'm gonna z the frame rather than section and channel it

Seems steep but it has almost no rust at all, like I said it's extremely solid, and idk if you guys have seen prices of cabs lately.. But that's about where they're at complete with everything, biggest problem for me, to find anything around here that's not so rotted that you can't keep the doors on you'll pay big bucks or the owner won't part with it with all the salt/snow/ect this is a North Dakota cab brought here and I still had to drive an hour and a half to find it.. It's rough around here, I guess I could have gone south but... Spending a dollar to save a nickel lol

Thank you, gotta go back up to get it here in a week or two and start collecting parts, I'd rather spend the money to get a solid complete cab up front then have a ton of time in making it right so it was worth it to me

Nice start. Don't worry about the price tag. Truck cabs have different prices in different parts of the country. If I shipped one to you, you would have paid even more. Plus you got the one you wanted. Kind of like picking out a horse.

That price is very reasonable, I've seen a lot worse for a lot more. I know the guys in Montana, North Dakota, etc are spoiled and can get them cheaper, but in Pennsylvania or Florida to find one that nice you gotta step up and grab it when you can. You can buy a rust bucket for less or start with a super nice one and save yourself a lot of work and money in the long run.

Looks like a really nice solid cab. Just how many did that guy have ? Looks like a lot of them in the background.

Let me give you a tip. Take some Ospho and a red scotchbrite pad and scrub that body, bare spots paint and all. Immediately wipe it all off before it dries with a clean cloth and you will be amazed how nice the body comes out and how it will help keep rust from forming. Do a small section at a time, and even the paint will shine up pretty nice.

I think you did well. The price isn't out of line for a decent Ford of that vintage. And starting with a decent solid cab is never a bad move. Sure you might have saved a couple hundred bucks buying a rougher one and then spent a ton of time welding in patches and dealing with rot. And really, what's a couple hundred bucks in the scope of a whole build cost anyway.

Great tip I'll be trying that out after I get it back and see what all work it's gonna need. As for how many cabs well.. He only had about 12 in stock but they have a bunch left he brings them all from somewhere in North Dakota he only sells Pre 1959 stuff, lots of really cool stuff even an early buick sedan body that someone made into a truck at one point, he sells mostly on eBay

I once read a comment in a magazine about how to buy a project, and it basically said "Spend a little more and get so much more." That really does make sense.

There is a guy on another forum who is saving a rusty 47 Ford tudor sedan that was about as bad a car as I have ever seen. I mean, every part of this thing had rusted away areas and needed new steel welded back in to fill the voids. God bless him, but he has so much time and mig gas and wire in the project he could have spent that money on a better body and been way ahead in time and cost.

I know some guys like a challenge, but to me the goal is to get the thing on the road as soon as possible as cheaply as possible. You made a very smart move buying that clean of a 38 body, and it will make you a really nice hot rod.
