Scotch-Brite pads and some elbow grease will knock the shine off. You can also buy a sanding/cleaning disc at the hardware store or WM that you can chuck up in your drill. Don't use the coarse one. I've used both on various chromed parts to dull them out.

Have you converted to 12v? If so, you could get a cheap electric fuel pump and mount it back by the tank to push the fuel to the mechanical pump. I had a Jeep CJ that would vapor lock on the highway in warm weather. We just flipped the switch to turn it on when it started to die.

Here in Texas we use the bucket on front of the tractor to pull engines.

It was a special edition cruiser from 1995-probably looked more like your old Phantom or Hornet before I stripped off the "extra" stuff. I wanted to give the bike more of a look like a 20's boardtrack bike. Here's a pic of one with all the goods still attached:
