RAGBRAI
I can't stop thinking about what a cool idea this is!
In 1973 some yocals had the idea to take a bicycle trip across Iowa. Sam Fear, Gearhead10 and the other Iowiegans know what RAGRAI is, but for the rest of you folks it is the Register's Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa. Over the years the Des Moines Register newspaper decided to sponsor the event and it is now one of, if not the largest statewide events. The bicyclists start by dipping their rear tire in the Missouri River and then ride from town to town along different designated routes each summer culminating with dipping their front tire in the Mississippi at the end of the week. Each night they stay in tents in different towns along the way. Many celebrities and thousands of people participate each year. People can make the entire trip or just ride from one town to the next. It's a great economic boost to the communities and helps draw tourism and attention to the state. Lots of partying along the way too, of course!
I could see this Route 66 trip becoming just as popular if it is picked up by a major sponsor. You may be on to something, George! Even if it's only this one time, it's still a great idea.
