I get on these restoration forums
And every time they open their mouths
They want me to spend $10000.
They told me that I WILL experience catastrophic failure of the transmission and transfer case because of the water that was in them.
That is just the tip of the iceberg

I refuse to rebuild and or replace every component on my truck
Especially the ones that are working fine and in great shape.
So I pick and choose what information is valid for me.
Sometimes it is hard to separate the crap from the gold on those forums

I will stop every few miles and feel the hubs etc and look for leaks or anything else bad.
But it should be okay

This ain't the first antique truck I have had
Slow
Noisy
Smelly
You have to put your back into turning the steering wheel
Doing the pedals is like a leg press
And will go slowly through darn near anything you point it at

Drove it home
Top speed is about 45
Any faster and the gears are winding like crazy.
But thanks to the modern engine it will keep that speed going up grades.
I still need to do the brake adjustment with a feeler gauge

Could you get an overdrive for behind the transfer case for driving in two wheel drive only? Disc brakes off of a Dana 60 front may work[S

That would be my recommendation. Overdrive for the highway, direct drive for off roading. Probably cheaper than changing gears, if you can even find different gears for those rears.

i have rust in the upper drivers side corner of the cab.
and the cowl where it meets the windshield
not real bad but its there
since i am not a welder
i am thinking of wire /flap wheeling it to remove as much as i can
then applying some POR15 and blasting it inside with compressed air

$1790 for the disc brake conversion for the m43 plus shipping the hubs to and fro S.C. plus install plus calipers/pads etc.
the machining is what cost so much. i will do it. but it will take time to save up
original brake parts are drying up and no more being made. good drums no longer can be had at any price.
until then
my next lil project is to do the time consuming pain in the butt minor and major brake shoe adjustments
